Would You Install Insulation In The Garage?

Live in a moderate climate zone and would insulate the living area common walls to the house(new construction), but was thinking about the roof rafters and the other walls and no really fancy cars inside .... so why bother and save alittle on insulation? The size of the garage is 20' x 20' with a shed roof with asphalt shingles on top. Get no snow during the winters....Thanks!

I would (and did). In case you ever want to work out there if you're in a cold climate and want to throw some heat out there, even if it's temp. Also you can throw a a/c unit out there if it gets real hot in the summer, again if you do any projects in the garage. I also used insulated O.H.D.'s.

I would bet it would be decades before you saw a return on heating or cooling cost. Insulated overhead door?

I had a neighbor who had no attic insluation in his house. I went to help install a fan and discovered this. It was forgotten by the builder and went almost a year. When he went to bitch he gathered all the neighbors electric bills so he could get re-imbursed and have some ammo.

His bills were actually in line with everyone elses. Took the wind out of his sails

You've never seen garage doors with the styrofoam panels on the inside? i think mainly it cuts down on noise.

I know that my house (it's 54 years old) never had inulation inder the roof (I have vaulted ceilings). This summer, I had to get the whole house redecked and reroofed. When they pulled the decking off, I had them put insulation in it. MAN, that made a huge difference. Before, on a hot day, the a/c ran all day long (seriously). Now it runs in normal cycles.

I know they have insulated doors and if I lived in a cold climate might consider that? If I ever heated the garage? Cooling I use a big fan and iit works fine for me.

I would imagine a 54 year old house would be a little less air tight?? I was really surprised when he did his utility bill check. I am not advocating no insulation but it did happen He was really upset that he couldn't go after them for the $$$'s

FWIW: In my area it is code....

This is so that, in the event that a future owner wants to install heating there, it is allset to go. ..

No doubt from the pure economic return, it is not a good investment, but the cost is not that great for a couple more walls and ceiling (even R11 or 13 in the ceiling is good here), and the "feel comfortable" factor is tremendous between insulated or not, when you have to do anything in the garage. IMO, absolutely.

Why would you? Unless you have plenty of money or your customer does, go for it!
