Workshop Question

I am designing a workshop for the wife and it is going to be 16 x 16 on 8" cement piers in the ground about 4 deep in Dallas. It will have a 2x10 or 2x12 rim joist and was wandering how far apart do you need to put piers adn should the floor joist be 16 OC or is 2' ok.

Re: Workshop Question

Your joists gonna be 2x10 or 2x12s too? Are you looking at putting a beam on the concrete piers or using the piers to support the joists themselves?

What kind of load is the floor gonna get? 4 framed walls (2x4, 2x6?) and a roof (gable, shed, gambrel, etc) plus what kind of machinery in the shop?

What are your soil conditions like? Will 8" piers be enough? Should you move up to 12" piers? Don't forget the rebar...

You want a wood floor on a workshop? Your floor sheets are 3/4" or 1 1/8"? This is elevated? If not, you've got airflow taken care of for the underside of the floor, right?

I would think you'd need an engineer's stamp on the plans to get city permit approval. They'd be able to work up the load paths on the structure and get you the correct footing placement.
