I have never seen the harm in the discussion other than in public view Potential clients seeing the pricing).

I belong to several contractor facebook groups and pricing is discussed all of the time. It's actually a productive discussion and gives everyone a perspective on the different regions and what they charge and why.

And as I have said before there are several pricing threads, especially one in particular in the painting section. So they have been allowed, recently.

Re: Why??!!??

Good points raised by TNT. I can only assume the forum is trying to avoid the hacks that come here and want an easy way to give a quote to an HO. Most probably are inexperienced but they just sign on here to see how high they can charge.

I like seeing what other (real business) guys are charging and maybe that's something the forum could do by having a private section.

I'm in a log building forum and we have a private member section that is only for "members." I paid for and attended a seminar which gave me a lifetime membership and access to the private forum section. It's pretty slick. And keeps the goons and hacks out.

Re: Why??!!??

I think half of the inquiries are from homeowners checking to see if the quote they got is realistic.

Re: Why??!!??

There's a big difference between a "throw me a number" post and an actual discussion. I think if the OP hangs around and isn't a jerk like this guy, one can turn into the other.

If someone just wants a number, go get Means.

Well you might as well go. The administration and the moderators of this site don't allow pricing questions. Because of the variability of costs in different areas around the country there is no real way to get it correct.

If on the other hand you wish to ask questions about how you can develop the right pricing we can help you with that. But if you are looking for someone to tell you what to charge, forget it. Thread will be deleted.

But you have allowed it and have not deleted all of them. So that's not entirely true.

And there are plenty of guys in the same region to be able to discuss price. It's a rather silly reason to not allow it. I mean, most understand that rural Idaho won't be charging the same as Chicago.

With all of the sites that give pricing I still don't see the big deal. But like I said, just make it allowable in the HH area.

Sometimes I catch them, sometimes I don't. If they get long enough, why bother stopping it.

You're not going to argue with me about this, right.

Because you said they were not allowed and would be deleted.

What is there to argue? I think it's a dumb rule and you have to enforce it as you see fit.

Re: Why??!!??

When I have a question about pricing, I may PM a member or two. I did just that a few days ago.

I may also may ask... how long everyone thinks something should take.

That, sometimes will give me a clue as to making a profit or losing my shirt on a particular job.
