Whats Up With Oregon?

Ok were in trouble, it seems building permits could become the next fossil if it passes it will allow homeowners to make improvements costing less than $35,000 to their home/real estate without first obtaining a building permit.

Welcome to the new way to do construction.

Wow

Re: Whats Up With Oregon?

"To me, it's so highly symbolic that in a country that claims to be as free as ours, you can't go out and nail some boards to the side of your house without the government's permission"

Just read through that link...this quote kills me! Kinda puts my job in perspective...building decks is now "nailing boards to the side of your house"

Like that whole loss of state revenue too. Total winner all-around...NOT.

Dude who's got those FAIL pics could stamp a big fat one on this.

Hay Mac,

It cost us more this year for postage to mail our ballot in. Yea I may get mine back in the mail, glad they said something before they send it in the mail to me, only after the fact did I learn of this.

Wow, one can do a lot of plumbing for the price of 35k.

I got no problem with that as long as they have real good insurance, never sell the house and it's destroyed when the owners die.

I'm not a big fan of the Government butting in anywhere, but I've seen enough dangerous work in my life to know it's necessary, unfortunately it's done more for tax revenues than safety, as is evident in many of of the projects that I have seen pass inspection that shouldn't have.

It don't bother you but you say you have seen enough dangerous work, so you would vote yes I take it?

At least if there was an inspection, that would let me sleep better, inspectors here in Eugene do there job and do there job well, and now it might let HO build what ever they feel like up to 35K thats $35,000 mackeyco. Code enforcement, there will be none unless your adding on and in new construction,

Re: Whats Up With Oregon?

Before I looked at the link, I thought "this has to be a Sizemore backed bill.", sure enough. I don't understand why this scumbag isn't in jail. Three times worse then ACORN has ever been, million dollar awards against him in lawsuits and he still is out there wasting taxpayer dollars all in the guise of helping us "ordinary citizens". With help from him we sure don't need any enemies.

Re: Whats Up With Oregon?

If this one passes I can see cases in court get hung up on someone's interpretation of what the value of the improvement is. I noted that it's based on improvements "valued" at up to 35k, not the cost of the improvement.

Do you think it has a chance of passing? By that I mean better than the odds of a ice cube in hel?

Good Luck
Dave

Hey, why not let them hook up their own gas lines too. It's a free country right?

Re: Whats Up With Oregon?

It will get shot down just like all the times they tried in enact a new gas tax, but yet they thought just by chance we would vote in on through. It seems like it happens every year, they try to sneak in a tax measure and each time it losses, and they they turn around and somehow find out the have more money then they thought.

Will let everyone know if this measure does pass, hear it here 1st.

Re: Whats Up With Oregon?

That is nothing compared to Denver where H.O. can pull permits on any trade if they take the open book test. I looked at a job 2 weeks ago where the house has asbestos wrapped pipe which the H.O. was going to abate and throw everything into the dumpsters in the alley! on top of that we have unlicensed handymen doing bathrooms, basement finishes, all under the H.O. permits which it clearly states that the H.O. has to do the work.

I usually drop mine in one of the Drop Boxes...that way, it can't get "lost" in the mail!

Yeah, the number is staggering. And anything where you're dealing w/ structural, electrical or plumbing w/ no oversight? Not a good scene...

Re: Whats Up With Oregon?

A limit of $35 k really would be no limit at all. A homeowner could do eight $30,000 projects on his house. Who gets to say where one project ends and the next begins?

If there is no permit how does the assessment office appraise and update the taxes?
