Re: What Do You Do For Winter Work?

I get as many interior remodels as I can, leave 1 crew here to handle them & I take the rest of the guys up to the mtns. to handle a series of large plowing contracts I landed in the early fall. Last year I noticed there was an over whelming demand for wreckers & recovery agents to pull people out of ditches & respond to accidents, so I'm looking for a couple 4x4 diesel wreckers so I can cash in........

(It may not be construction/building, but there is work available. Just dig a little deeper "outside the box")

Well, you probably wouldn't say that working here lately. This morning it was -30C plus a windchill making it -40C. 1hr west of here it was -40C without windchill.

Weather has everything to do with working.

We did however work.

???? I have no idea what those "C's" mean but it's -3F here at the moment.

That means office work for me

-30*C = -22*F
-40*C = -40*F

A relatively balmy -15*C (5*F) here this AM; yesterday AM was -32*C

Cheers, Ron

EDIT: canuck; I second your statement that "Weather has everything to do with working"...especially up here in the frozen north.

It was 56 here this morning and almost looked like it might drizzle.
I nearly froze and was scared to death I would get wet so we rolled up and went home.
One guy actually got some rain mist on his SkilSaw. We immediately doused it with WD-40. I think it will be okay.

Re: What Do You Do For Winter Work?

Good suggestion getting into snow removal if the annual snowfall supports it.

We were in that business for about 27 years, the last 14 as owner. All seasonal contracts, most prepaid. Got paid if it snowed, got paid if it didn't. Kept the monkey off our backs during cold weather. Delinquencies were about 1/2 of one percent . . . or less.

However, laying under a truck with a broken drive shaft at 2 am with slush running down your neck takes some getting used to. Working multiple shifts back to back with little sleep can be a challenge.

However, most of the time the cab of the truck is warm and dry . . . . .

Re: What Do You Do For Winter Work?

I tried to hold off my interior work until into January and February. I would take little interior jobs and handyman work. IMO, there's no point in working outside in bone chilling temps. I charged enough and set some aside anticipating the slow down during the winters. Tried to spend some time enjoying fishing, snowshoeing, and hunting.
Some people drape a makeshift shelter over their work with plastic or tarps and then run heaters just to bring it up to 40 or 50.
I decided this year would be different so I picked up everything at the end of November and moved to Houston.
I could see Jay Peak if I drove over the hill from my place. In fact, one job last January I was working 40' up in the air in -20 F weather residing and installing windows. The wind was blowing so hard I had to quit a few times. The homeowner always had hot tea or coffee and I took breaks every two hours for about 30 minutes. I remember watching Jay Peak disappear in white outs from the snow blowing between the peaks. I remember thinking to myself that it was crazy to be working in those conditions. This was one of very few jobs I ever took outside. I did this only because it entailed more work inside for the winter.
