Waste Disposal Business?

I need info on the Roll Off business
This is my first post ever, although I have been an outsight observer of this sight for a while. I have some questions about starting a business but I am just now at the beginning stages, basically just getting information.

My father has been the manager of a local landfill since it opened in 1995 and I worked there part-time while in college. So I have a "working knowledge" of the roll-off business but no real experience.

Hopefully my questions will lead to some informative discussion.
1) Is there any money in this for a small business. (dually, roll off trailer, about 5 small containers, and not much cash!)
2) Is anyone else in this business?
3) Is it possible to make money servicing the small contractor or do the big companies own this market?
4) Do you dispose of your own waste or do you currently use this kind of service? What have your experiences been?

Thank you for reading this long rambling post!

Re: Waste Disposal Business?

My experiances are:

I can get a 30YD for $280... Damn good deal.
I have an old truck that can hold about 7 YDS and I can get it dumped for roughly $50.
Got Junk (national, may not be in your area) They will come and load crap and dispose of it for you... size about 8 yds... cost for a full truck $400 +

Personally I would rather call and get a 30yd anytime unless it is only a small truckload (f-250 8'bed) then I will take that to the dump $15-25... plus fuel and drive time and unload time... I bet it would "cost" me about $120 for that load... If I have more than 1 load I will get the roll off.

Smaller roll offs for me dont make much sense unless there is a space problem as a 10 YD costs me $200 20 YD $230-240. Why not get a larger size in case the neighbors decide to toss thier old sofa in my roll off and I now cant fit my stuff.

Re: Waste Disposal Business?

Within the last few years the three LARGE roofers near me all bought their own roll offs and roll off trucks
