Toe Nail And Face Nailing

Anybody ever heard that code dictates toe nailing of studs to top and bottom plates instead of shooting nails through the top or bottom face of the plates into the studs?

Never heard of that. It assumes prefab framing which is not always possible. I haven't prefabed in years, I tried it a few times and was not satisfied with the fits.

Re: Toe Nail And Face Nailing

I have. My current project had to have toe-nailed every stud top and bottom. Nailing through the plate (standard) was only to be used for erection - as in standing the walls. The biggest issue with the house was that it was so tall they were worried about overturning and uplift. After we started applying materials the engineer figured out that we actually have 0 uplift due to the weight of all the materials.

Re: Toe Nail And Face Nailing

So Rich that was based specifically on the engineering for just that house or a blanket code against face nailing on any house?

Engineering alone. I should also add - Weld County

Hey Mike - if you're ever up in Greeley let me know before you come and I'll give you the tour of the house

Re: Toe Nail And Face Nailing

Was the location a factor in this, because Weld gets so many tornados? If the same house was built in Denver county it wouldn't have been required?

About the only time I get up to Greeley is when going into the Poudre', but it would probably be worth the trip to see these monsters you are always working on.

Re: Toe Nail And Face Nailing

haha.. only worked on one - just been on it for 2 years
Honestly I couldn't tell you if it had anything to do with Weld, code, or whatever. The original engineer was Gay and Loudermilk out of Houston - why I don't have a clue. There were some poor decisions made at the start of the project before I was involved.. and the design team was one of them
I'll talk to our current engineer and see what he has to say on Monday.

Re: Toe Nail And Face Nailing

Or I should say - I think that it was strictly an engineering issue for height of walls and that we're on top of a hill with a 100 mph wind used in all calcs.

Yeah, - - out my way you have to toe-nail whether you face-nailed or not, - - the inspectors want to see the nails, - - (too many cheaters out there).

Re: Toe Nail And Face Nailing

while were on this thread. i worked for framing contractor few years ago. guy figured by using only 3 nails per stud he could save few hundred dollars in gun nails per home. these homes were selling for close to 1mil 6 years ago.

Re: Toe Nail And Face Nailing

Why do I feel those stud brackets will be the next piece of hardware that will be added to the local code. But I am sure the between the 3 in nailing and bracket the stud will blow up. Just like the LS70's the are installed to the bird blocks. Which because the new ventlation standards requires the blocks to have 4 holes drilled. Then are nailed again through the roof sheathing. Fails even before it starts.

Re: Toe Nail And Face Nailing

LOL, dont say that Just. It might happen. A few yers ago it became code to put hurricane/seizmic hangers on all the roof trusses here in Wi. You know, cuz in Wisconsin we get SOOOOO many hurricanes and earthquakes!

I asked an old timer once if they actually served any purpose really. He said, "sure, now when a tornado rips your roof off it will take the top plates with it:.

Re: Toe Nail And Face Nailing

Oh H1's and H2.5's. When I started I was only required in cities with stricter code. Then they were every other truss. Now they are every one. Another thing that was the foundo to frame straps. Use to be only found on the front of garages. Now they are all the way around with floor to floor straps directly above. Another fun strap is 2 cs16 straps horizontal on walls end to end.

Longacre, how do you feel now? Tonights news said that you had hurricane force winds there.
It only has to 64 kts.
