Split Columns
I am putting up several split fiberglass columns around some downspouts. This is the first time I have ever had to use the split ones, done numerous types of one piece and custom built columns, but never these.
Question is.......what is best to adhere the two halves together? I thought about epoxy, but is there a good one that is sandable? I tried regular liquid nails and was gonna just bondo the seams, but the glue popped the next day. Then I tried Locktite Instant Grab, but again it looked great the next morning but an hour or so after I pulled off the straps it too popped loose. Any help or product suggestions would be greatly appreciated, getting really frustrated here................. ![]() Lee |

Re: Split Columns
Did 6 of these on a hexagonal pavillion with Gorilla glue and straps. Also used screws and steel plates at the top and bottom behind trims as extra security. Scraped excess glue from seems, then bondo and sand to smooth. I heard from the other carpenter I did them with that some of the seams developed hairline cracks in the bondo and had to be reworked but the glue has held.
I've seen guys try to do it with standard construciton adhesive with limited success(some columns good, others with failing seems). I would call the column manufacturer and see what they are recommending. |

Re: Split Columns
Epoxy is the first thing that comes
to mind for fiberglass.

Re: Split Columns
System-Three Company makes several different epoxys. Call their customer support to find out which one would be best for your application.

Re: Split Columns
I know this is late, but most of the time you should be able to order a "split kit" for this situation. Includes adhesive, straps etc. costs about $15 bucks. ask your supplier
