Special 'hole' Inspection
The last set of plans I got approved had a new one - the inspector has to come out before you drill holes for your hold downs, etc... and verify the bit size, that the hole is cleaned out and watch you inject the epoxy and set the bolt. Is it just me or is this going too far?

Re: Special 'hole' Inspection
How much extra do they charge on the inspection/permit to stand there for an hour or so while the guy drills and sets all the bolts?

Re: Special 'hole' Inspection
While you drill? Never heard of that crap. They always wanna seee bottle brush/air/inject/and set, never heard 'em wanna watch you drill. That's f'n nuts. Aint it fun?
I've long wondered if it was easier to just drill/epoxy all the hold downs later. It's always difficult for me to get the framer here at the right time to lay it out correctly. He's not on-site yet, and doesn't understand/care enough yet. Crap ends up in the wrong place, and you have to drill anyways. |

Re: Special 'hole' Inspection I asked Michael (hubby) about this and he's heard of it. Said some cities up here require it too. Probably another earthquake thing. Or another way to make money. I'd say it's going too far. |

Re: Special 'hole' Inspection
Yeah the city of Seattle did it when the framing crew sierra'd every hold down bolt off because they didn't want to drill through the sole plate of the walls. Yeah they are faster. puto's LOL Three buildings and and 8 hours for two building later the inspector left to come back for the next building. LOL
I have heard that some places in Kali use a 2000 lbs jack rigged some way to put uplift pressure on the bolts to make sure the expoxy held. Sounds like you got off light. Last edited by JustaFramer; 04-14-2006 at 05:49 PM. |

Re: Special 'hole' Inspection
We didn't know about special inspections until a "by the book" inspector called us on it. He made us hire a private testing lab to pull on a percentage of the bolts to the rated withdrawal force. Fortunately they all held.
I've asked a few inspectors since and they say to ask them before we set the bolts to see if they want to check hole for depth and cleanliness. Most say go ahead if it's just a few. One inspector said he wanted to see the empty epoxy containers at a later inspection to check the "use by date". |
