Sound Control

hey guys i have a customer that wants sound proof one wall in his connecting house. I told him the best way and cheapest was to just insulate the walls and re rock it. The reason for this is that he is going to have tenant living in the other part of the house and he is very anal about the sound issues. Any ideas on the best way to do this without putting double layers of rock up.
Thanks in advance
Dave

Regular fiberglass batts (R-13)
will do next to nothing.

Re: Sound Control

A drawing of where the room is located in the house would help immensely.

Re: Sound Control

Basic sound attenuation construction consists of:

Double framed walls (offset studs),

Sound attenuation blankets in each wall (insulation, the more dense the better)

Acoustic sealant at top and bottom of walls.

These are the applications in apartment/multifamily construction in the south (SBC/IBC).

Re: Sound Control

And don't call it Sound Proofing. There is no such thing, at least not for a budget. Call it Sound Dampening, because all you are going to be able to do is reduce the amount of sound vibration. Eliminating it is near impossible.

Dittos to all the above

You can try looking into these companies www supressproducts com & www soundisolationcompany com

FYI... I have seen both products in use at trade shows & it cut down the noise big time but have never have used them in the field

Don't forget about noise coming through the ducts, attic, floor, etc... you can take care of a wall but if the ducts are connected you can here almost everything

Re: Sound Control

sand inside the walls is one of the cheapest methods, just make sure it is dry. Also, using different sized lumber in the framework of the wall prevents resonance within the wall itself. This is all methodology used in proffesional recording facillities.

Re: Sound Control

Sound has the same property as water or light in this regard.
Meaning if joints are not sealed properly sound will pass through.
By joints I mean where the top and bottom wall plates are fastened, where drywall meets the stud edge, around electrical outlet and switches etc.
All of these areas should be caulked, all areas should be fully insulated and sound dampening boards should be installed prior to the drywall installation.
Hope this helps.
