I like yours too. Very much the same style as they used for D&D. I just mentioned Bert's because he and I were bouncing around some ideas for the wording of his site a few months ago.

Re: Sketchup

Willie, got your PM. Thanks.

Yea, alot of the changes I made to my business I got ideas from off this site so it probably a thread someone started that I discovered that motivated me to move on my site.

Same thing about this SU thing. Kind of stumbled across it, saw someone mention free version so I thought 'what the heck, I'll try it' and now I wish I did sooner so I would be farther along.

Re: Sketchup

The thing I like best about SU is that you can turn out a 3-D "concept" drawing in literally 5 to 15 minutes. I do it all the time right here while a discussion is going on online. Of course that's not all colored, textured, and photo realistic. That takes about 20 minutes longer.

Truthfully, once you get the hang of it, this program is lightning fast. And one day we'll begin to tell you about all the "Ruby Script" add-ins. They really set you on fire in the speed department.

In two weeks, you'll be saying "This took me about five minutes." Honest!

Confession Time: I literally cussed this SU program for awhile. I thought it had been the creation of a spawn of the Devil. But I hung in there, and things began clicking for me.

Yeah, the work some of these guys and gals turn out blows my mind. This (of course) is not my work. If I could just learn to make the sky look like that I'd be thrilled.

Re: Sketchup

Hey, this old, feeble minded, forgetful fart began at age 62 to learn Sketchup. I'm no expert today, two years later, but I can crank out a fairly respectable looking drawing. Just keep on plugging away.

Well, the modeling could easily have been done in sketchup, but not the rendering, unless they have the vray plugin for it. Still, a very impressive display of what sketchup can do.

Thank you mics and willy. The hep you guys are giving is why I come here.

BTW, where did that picture come from Willy?

I would like to someday turn out stuff like these guys. Absolutely stunning what they do.

Is all that framing done in Sketchup7? If so, how do you do that?

There is a woman who has written a few books on sketchup. You can buy them as hard copies or down load them as PDFs instantly. She has a Vol I and a Vol II. I have found them to be way easier to learn from.

Yes all the framing is done in SU. The framing is created by the creation of componants and/or wall sections which can be made into "dynamic componants" with the pro version or with the free version may be imported and modified by entering the number of studs, type of wall (6" or 4" etc) There isn't alot of dynamic componants available specific to residential framing yet so I build examples of framing which I save as componants and modify as needed.
Basically I create a "plate" as a componant wich inables the program to enumerate and recognise with a name that is recognised buy the "cutlist" plugin which will track the number of these instances the componant is utilized in the drawing.

I can copy and place the componant like a "stud" where ever I want within the drawing and the number of instances of that componant is tracked with in the drawing. However one a componant is modified it will change all the other instances of that componant likewise... so when you modify a componant you must either make it "unique" or change it to a new componant.
It's really not as complicated as it sounds but becomes an excercise in drawing managment and in time second nature. I have componant groups (componants within componants) like groups for door framing sections, window sections and corner sections. Componants can be copied and placed in arrays and linearly easily, modified and grouped.
The trusses in the previous image I "built" and saved as a componant the copied and placed over my stud layout then I chose one and copied it for modification, made unique, exploded then changed to an attic truss for the attic section.
It's fun to use and a very useful tool for creating working drawings and developing solutions on the fly. Handy when communicating design specifications with clients over the internet.

I realise it may not make alot of sense without being able to see it done.
I am toying with the idea of holding tutorials via "go to meeting" but my current computer hardware is lacking in the graphics area and not sure how soon I can upgrade. In such a "go to meeting" a "student" can see my screen and I can see theirs and communicate via phone and go through the program functions one on one or in a group. I know of another tutor that does this now and would be glad to send you his contact info if anyone is interested.
