Sheathing

What is the difference between gypsum sheathing and OSB 7/16 sheathing? Can I use OSB under stucco?

Re: Sheathing

I guess I should have said it differently. I KNOW what gypsum and OSB are.
The gist of my question is, I know you use gypsum on your walls and OSB on the outside corner for support on stucco walls, but can you use OSB on all outside walls deleting the need for gypsum? ( I guess every board has it's )

Re: Sheathing

We use OSB or Plywood on stucco applications here. The only time gyp is used is when a type x fire rating is needed even then that is in combination with ply or osb.

Re: Sheathing

Weatherall in Sanders Indiana makes a direct applied stucco that with the proper preb works really well over OSB. In fact, if I remember correctly it's the recommended sub strat.

Re: Sheathing

around here every one uses OSB for everything, walls and roofs (except the cheap builders who still mix celotex in wherever they can. They paper it and chicken wire then stucco seems to work fine but you should gap each seam AT LEAST an 8 penny nail 16 penny is the best though.

Re: Sheathing

I have found an amazing new fiber reinforced cement board that could replace most sheating, stucco issues. This stuff comes in 1/8" and 1/4" thickness and is cost effective. You can direct apply stucco finish and have the same effect as 1/4" plaster. It's called RhinRok. Cool inovative stuff.
