Why do you use one over the other?

Everything has an appropriate use.
Do i use one over the other? Yes, but let me explain myself.
A screw, as you are probably well aware of, has much greater withdrawal resistance then a nail. That being said, in situations where withdrawal is an issue, i would use a screw. Screws don't rattle around as much as say, hammering or shooting in a nail would, so they could/would be beneficial in a situation where there is fragile plaster etc. Screws are easier to remove if need be... But they take longer to install. Nails are better then screws in alot of situations and vice versa. But... That being said, it all depends on the situation to dictate, screw or nail.. I know some guys are strictly screws (Mike Holmes) but i am quite curious to see how he screws down asphalt shingles or how he can explain to the engineer why structural framing connections are simply screwed together w/o structural screws.
Blah blah im bored.

But, unless the screws are structurally rated they break because they're too hard, that's why nails are used for shear walls and not screws. Nothing like reviving an eight year old thread. Since this thread was started screws have been introduced by Simpson as structural.

This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
