Question

Retrofit Fire Door

We've just installed seven, 20 minute Fire Door Retrofit kit's in a old home turned apartments. One of the doors has a window in it and we don't want to cover it with our beautiful piece of steel.

My question is, has anyone ever done anything like this before?? We want to cut out the window, but we of course have to keep the 20 min. fire rating and pass inspection from the City (Ottawa, Ontario). Has anyone succeeded in doing this, and if so, how??

Any insight is appreciated.

Re: Retrofit Fire Door

Windows in a fire door are limited to "X" sq. inches and wireglass I think depending on the Label rating.

Re: Retrofit Fire Door

I didn't really explain the product we used to give the existing doors the 20 min. code.

It come in a 3' x 7' piece we cut to fit every door. Then screw around the perimeter every 4 inches. As I said before, one door had a window in it and we cut it out, planning on doing something later to retain the 20 min. code.

The Fire Inspector wasn't impressed that we cut a hole in the product. He couldn't approve anything we did unless we got it approved from an Engineer.

Again I ask....has anyone done anything like this?? And what detail did you use around the window to maintain the 20 min. code???
