Remove Paint Before Adding More Concrete?
I'm going to be rebuilding these stairs, and will be pouring more concrete to bring the level up to the larger slab and then putting the stringers onto that. My question: Should I be removing the paint on the old concrete first? The minimum thickness of new crete will be about three inches. There's lots of flaws and holes where the old stringers and posts are buried in the old crete, so I'm not concerned with the new slab 'sliding' off the old but maybe water/ice issues if I don't? Rich.

Re: Remove Paint Before Adding More Concrete?
Most definetly strip it! You are very right about the water/ice issues. When water gets in between the two slabs, and it will if you don't strip it, the freeze/thaw cycles will eventually seperate them.
Doesn't look like too much area and the paint already looks thin so a good angle grinder with a course sanding disk should get most of it. Then use a good concrete bonding agent/primer before you pour the second slab and you should have no problems. Just for extra piece of mind you might want to pin the new slab to the old in a few places. |

Tks, Firemike. TS, I tried to read your post but couldn't get through it, I suggest you keep them shorter in the future.
Rich.
