Raising A House...

I had a thought, it did not create too much of an explosion. But it was a thought…

Second floor additions are becoming very popular. Would there be justification in raising the entire home from its foundation and put the addition under the raised house.

I have seen and felt the reality of rain, snow and wind on a removed roof and open house. The liability alone is crazy. To raise the house ten feet and build a new floor and wall system under it seems like a condition made in builder heaven. Put hording around the opening and you are in a controlled environment within a short period of time.

No…?

Re: Raising A House...

I think it would be "interesting" to say the least....I have raised older garage apartments 2 feet and built new stem walls so they could be converted to apartments below instead of their original use, and going up a few feet was not particularly difficult, BUT, we are talking about 600 sq/ft and not an entire house...I wonder if the expense of jacking and stability would negate the advantages, not to mention the architectural fine points.

I worked on a small one bedroom house that had this done, the homeowner had to move out for the duration of the project until all the mechanicals could get re-assembled.

I've raised and moved some pretty crazy crap in my day, never gone 10 feet up but I wouldn't hesitate to do it with a full structure. Better account for some time........... chains, bolts and cables are your friends.

Re: Raising A House...

I did this once, it was a split level house in the middle of a subdividable lot.
We picked it up and moved it over 30 ft.
it cost $5000.00 to lift and move. then it was about 30,000 for the rebuild.
Makes a lot of sence to me.

Re: Raising A House...

Working on one right now going to raise the old home, built on 10x10 post, will be raised 5'. 2.5' will be headroom to make the first floor have 10' ceiling the other 2.5' is to raise above flood level. the whole first floor is open kitch, den, livingroom, and 1 bathroom. The second floor will absorb the small kitchen into a larger master suite with an office. This alone would be a hard job price wise for the sq. footage but we're adding a porch and 2 car garage too while the crews are there

Re: Raising A House...

Just watched a two story get lifted 15+ ft. They had a new foundation poured and a new first floor. Funny to drive by a see an extension ladder propped up to the front door that high up. Lived on the river for a while watched a few get lifted 3-4' those that didn't bought a new Jon boat.
