Raising Collar Ties
Hello, I am a painter by trade but I have an unrelated question hoping to get some pro advice on, I started my second floor gut and remodel this week and have most of the demo and clean up completed. I want to raise the collar ties to gain more head room . So this brings me to my question. the ceiling are low to begin with, there is eave storage space running the length of the house on the front and the back has a shed dormer. When I mentioned that to the Building inspector, he said it would not be a problem, but if they where above the 1/3 then I would have to put in a beam. After ripping it apart, the ties are already high (8-10" below ridge board) so I was wondering do I have to put in a beam or could I just raise the ties up becasue of the shed dormer on the back and the knee wall on the front? What is the best way to raise these, like I mentioned there is a knee wall in the front separating the bedrooms from the eave storage and the back is a shed dormer. I may knick the knee wall back a little to maximize the bedroom space. Thanks, any advice would be great!
