Question On Caulk??? Best Kind

any opinions on GE silcone II for windows ? ITS SOLD AT HOME DEPOT. I know everyone hates HD but they are open late and always near a job site. i figure this caulk is better than that DAP stuff they sell. we use the GE product for any caulking that needs to be done on the inside and OSI Quad for any outdoor caulking.

Re: Question On Caulk??? Best Kind

We havent used silicone caulk in years. The only time we use it, is if it is extremely cold out. I cant speak specifically about the GE product but it always seems that silicone doesnt adhere to vinyl windows to well. At the present time we also use OSI Quad. The best caulk we have ever used is a product called Solar seal 900.

5200 silicone, Used for marine apps. Below waterline fittings etc. Pretty much bonds anything to anything.

OSI is what I used to use for vinyl siding jobs. From what Ive heard, it stays flexible for a long time. My painter told me GE II is also good.

I agree, Quad and solar seal are near impossible to push out of the tube when very cold. We always have to warm it up in the customers house.

Dymeric, comes in 2 1/2 gallon pails, mix it up, customize the color, suck it into the gun and that's the best.

If that's not going to happen use Quad, keep it warm.

Re: Question On Caulk??? Best Kind

I beleive that the GE Silicone II is an exterior only caulk You should be using a latex with silicone added caulk for the interior. The best u can get in my opinion is Pecora AC-20 but it is hard to find. Get a latex that has at least 35year warranty. I found the lower warranty ones are to watery.

Quad is only for the exterior. You might not notice it outside but if used inside there is a strong odor that takes a long time to disappear.

Re: Question On Caulk??? Best Kind

i guess it seems NOT to use a 100% silicone on the inside. they have siliconized latex/acrylic. a mixture of all three. perhaps thats the best route?

Re: Question On Caulk??? Best Kind

Usually 100% silicone isnt paintable, so it wouldnt be a good choice except for around tile in bathrooms.. Acrylic and latex are the same thing. So a mix of a acrylic/latex with a small amount of silicone is best for interior applications.

OH man we tried that marine stuff for awhile. I can't remember the name brand but it was something like 17$ a tube. It was nearly impossible to get out of the tube. I decided that I didn't need caulk that lasted that long. How long realistically until the bathroom is remodeled? The stuff took a real long time to fully cure as well.

Re: Question On Caulk??? Best Kind

The main problem with silicone caulk is that most of it isn't paintable. There is a "silicone 3" (various brands and name variations) that is paintable.

Good stuff, but hard to get out of the tube, as noted above on some of the other high-end caulk. Around $7 per tube.

I do like that OSI. Isn't it marketed as siding caulk? I use it in place of grout caulk.

Stampede by Sherwinn Williams. Very sticky. Dries very slow and like soft rubber. Paintable, Kinda hard to squeeze out of the tube. $5.60 a tube over here.

Also use OSI Quad.

And use SikaFlex and other Sika products. Sika has a caulk, sealant for just about anything. But you won't find this brand at Home Depot, Lowes or any home improvement store, and very few lumber yards. Usually only at specialized contractor supply houses.

Years ago in my first house I painted my garage floor with Sika. My buddy got it for me thru the building supply co. he worked for.

Re: Question On Caulk??? Best Kind

I'm fan of the Solar Seal/NPC 900 for about anything.

I used it in my bathroom, use it on all window wraps and siding jobs. JUst have to keep it warm, and if flows out nice and smooth.

I like to cut the nip, flush and flat, no angle. Then just keep the gun fixed in the same posistion square to the seam I'm caulking and keep steady pressure and steady speed.
