Re: Pressure Treated Wood Question????
Why all PT?
Is it to remain exposed to the elements without any veneer such as brick, siding or stucco? PT stuff is typically not kiln dried after treatment... so when you build with it, it is wet and can and does twist as it dries. More project info and someone on the site can be more helpful. |

Re: Pressure Treated Wood Question????
i guess building a deck would warrant ALL pressure treated wood? how would the wood then be stained?
would the footing postes be pressure treated as well as the joists or just the floor decking? |

Re: Pressure Treated Wood Question????
The wood exposed to the weather should be pressure treated or naturally resistant (redwood, cedar) to moisture. The amount of treatment or loading depends on whether it is in direct contact of just exposed to the weather.
All treated wood must be connected with the appropriate fasterens (plates, nails, screws) AND all normal wood connected to the treated wood must have the same type of fasteners. Generally, there is no benefit using treated wood where not required, but there is the potential problems caused later by long term exposure to the chemicals. This is the reason for the changes in the materials used for treatment.

Re: Pressure Treated Wood Question????
Yes, building a deck would, but your building an addition, so you don't need any pressure treated studs and plywood.

Re: Pressure Treated Wood Question????
Are you building an addition now or a deck that may be converted to a 3 season room and then ultimately to a finished addition?
This is a comon aproach, but it requires planning and awareness to codes and the fact that they will change. My son did the same thing and had to tear out some along the way as the codes changed and enforcement got enforced more.

Re: Pressure Treated Wood Question????
I don't believe pressure-treated wood is even legal in 'living space' (aside from basements), at least here in Jersey.
I'm guessing because in the case of a fire the noxious fumes would kill you even before the smoke or flames. |

Re: Pressure Treated Wood Question????
You could use marine ply but be pepared to pay. The only time I have ever installed marine was because stone was going over the area where the marine was installed.
Like the others I don't see any point using pt for anything else other than a sole plate that is in contact with concrete. Or for deck building. |
