Pole Building Footing -36"?

I'm looking over the architect's plans for a pavilion/shed pole building-24' truss span. He called for 36" piers for the 6x6 poles. Typically for residential applications 16" for an on center post or 18" for an off center post is accepted. Has anyone heard of using 36" piers-that's 6-7ft^3 for each of the 17 piers-that adds up to a lot of work and concrete!

Depends on soil and loading.....is the architect specifying the building and you are bidding? If so, it isn't your call anyway, you just build it....if it is a 'pre-design or pre-engineered" situation, then consult with an engineer or at least the local building or code guy and see what is required. Architects are not engineers.

Keep in mind, public use buildings have different code requirements. Doesn't hurt to have a copy of the IBC around.
