Question

Mold Abatement

The problem is mold. The roof leaked at a corner and the entire wall will be coming down, in time, like early June. In the meantime the mold stench is invading the house now that the cheesy fiberboard outer skin is gone. The insulation is wet and the wood stinks.
???
Can I take down the siding that was under the fiberboard, spray a few gallons of bleach in there and cover the mess up until June, when the carpenters can get to this project? Or should I just drill some large holes in the old siding and pump the bleach in that way? I was thinking of using a few 2 X 4's to cross brace and use real rubber (EPDM) tarps from a trucking company for six weeks if I have to remove the siding. What else would make a good (read cheap) temporary covering?

Re: Mold Abatement

Try and contain the room where the mold is from the rest of the house until you can do the work.

Re: Mold Abatement

First off, Bleach doesn't kill mold, and will be more harmful than the mycotoxins that the mold releases. your best bet is to find a product called benefect (google it, I can't post a link) take some 6 mil and tuck tape, and totally seal off the effected wall until such time as you can take care of it.. if it's been leaking for that long, it's going to be pretty bad when you open it up, so if you're remediating it yourself, call around equipment rental places nearby for an air scrubber.. should run you about 150 for 2 days.. it'l have a HEPA filter, run it while you tear the mold out, and leave it running for 24 hours.. take a hepa vac over the moldy area as well once you are finished as well. give another spray with benefect or other powerful fungicide.
