Mark Up

I am going to try this a different way. Is it generally acceptable to charge my markup on to top of the materials I buy including tax. I always have but a client is contesting. If it makes any difference I am in New York. Curious how everyone else handle this stuff. Thanks. It is a T&M job and I have been just adding the receipts, including tax, and marking that up.

Re: Mark Up

You are saying that he protests you marking up the tax?

Why does he know what you are paying for materials? You are doing T&M work?

Tell him you have to charge him tax on materials (if you are marking materials up you should be charging tax) so he will pay it either way.

I'm reading Mark up and profit by Michael Stone right now. I highly suggest it.

Re: Mark Up

What is your original understanding? Anything in writing? Usually not on t&m. Oh well, in Jersey I have seen as low as 15% but usually 40-50%.

You could add - delivering said items, time at the store, research, etc.
