Kansas Tornados
Anyone from that area? Do they need builders, and I was checking on the requirements for out of state contractors. They seem pretty easy going.

GMann40 -
Maybe, if you are lucky, you will get your very own tornado and get work without driving. Its probably easier going where you are.

Re: Kansas Tornados
I live about 90 miles from Greensburg, KS. There is literally nothing left in this town except the grain elevator. 961 homes were destroyed and about 100 businesses. Most say they plan to rebuild so yes, there will be a need for more builders in the area. FEMA is involved and although Kansas is generally pretty lax in respect to contractors and licensing, I imagine this will be scrutinized pretty well, as it should be. Closest suppliers are 30 miles in either direction from Greensburg...also closest lodging which will likely take a hike with all of the demand.
It will be a long haul before it looks like a town again. |

Re: Kansas Tornados
My area was wiped out by an F3 tornado about 6 years ago, i lost my place, I was renting a townhouse and building a house. My insurance lapsed 2 weeks prior to the tornado. I lost just about everything except my car (I was at work) and my family (the only important thing)
It will take a long time before anything is done. When we got hit, the insurance companies were overwhelmed. I know some people that took wel over a year to get started in the rebuild while they were getting things sorted out. I was lucky since I was set to close on my new house a month after the tornado. IF you are geniunely interested in helping send some donations, if your driven by profit potential, maybe you deserve your own tornado and shouldnt be such a dbag. |

Re: Kansas Tornados
I wouldn't automatically assume this guys is a douchebag.
961 homes need to be replaced in a town that only had 961 homes. How many builders do you think were there? How is a contractor going to where work needs to be done being a DB? |

Re: Kansas Tornados
I wasnt trying to say he was, but if the guy is out to just make $ it doesnt set well with me after my experience. OBviously everyone here is going to be familiar with the bad wrap contractors get from guys who take deposits, dont carry insurance, and cut out never to be heard from again. (again I am not saying this guy is)
Rebuilding will be rough enough for without power, generators were sold out within 100 miles around us, building materials were scarce. With out a doubt there will be people who move in to take advantage of the people affected by this disaster. Some of the things I saw were people stealing air conditioner, ripping gutters down and looting peoples homes. I personally camped out with a 45 my dog and my mag light to protect my possesions that remained, ducking the national guard patrols. I do appologize for coming off brash, I am still jaded by all the rubberneckers who appeared and rather than offering to help anyone just drove aroudn looking for a way to capitalize on the situation.

Anyone have contact info for setting up?

Re: Kansas Tornados
Kansas
With the exception of asbestos abatement and water well drilling, Kansas doesn't license construction contractors at the state level. But you should check for licensing requirements at the local level. For a list of licensed asbestos abatement contractors, click http://www.kdhe.state.ks.us/asbestos...d/contract.pdf. For links to county information, click on http://skyways.lib.ks.us/counties/. For links to city websites, click on http://skyways.lib.ks.us/towns/. There are some registration requirements for revenue purposes in Kansas. If you're a non-resident contractor, you have to register each contract worth over $10,000 with the secretary of revenue. It will cost you $10 for each contract. If you register with the Secretary of State (see below) you don't have to register your contracts. You do have to file a bond with the Director of Revenue in Kansas for any contract you register before you start any work on the contract. The amount of this bond is 8 percent of the contract (minimum $1,000). To do business in Kansas, register with the Kansas Department of Revenue. You can contact them at: State of Kansas Docking State Office Building 915 SW Harrison St., 3rd Floor Topeka, KS 66625-0001 (913) 296-0222 Fax: (913) 291-3614 http://www.ink.org/public/kdor/ They will send you forms and information booklets to tell you how to register contracts, get a tax number, post bonds, and so on. Re: Kansas Tornados
The national guard and several nearby county agencies are doing all the cleanup, basically loading up the whole town and hauling it away after residents salvage what they can. They hauled 579 truckloads off in the last 2 days! The word locally is they don't need any volunteers or extra help just money donated. Maybe when they are gone there will still be some minor clean up work to be had? As far as rebuilding,I have heard of a few local builders who say they will go, but don't expect it to really boom for a few months.
