Jack Stud Sizing Under Window Headers?

Does anyone know the actual ruling of IRCC2006 for the minimum size that a "jack stud or trimmer" can be under a exterior wall window header. I have used a double 2 X 12 with 1/2" OSB for a exterior wall window header on a 8' high window and my framer wants to use less than a single 2X for the window trimmer. I have never seen anything less than a 2X single or a double 2X used for support.
Can anyone help me find a ruling of minimum sizing for trimmers under this circumstance.

Thanks

You are the General Contractor, tell the framer how You want it done, you are the one running the job, not him.

I deal with FBC, so I don't know what the IRCC would be, but all building codes are the "Minimum" requirements.

height dosnt matter on eight foot wall! length of header determins how many trimmers to install. four feet and under one trimmer each side, over four feet double trimmer each side.

Re: Jack Stud Sizing Under Window Headers?

It depends on what the header is supporting. Just a roof and ceiling; Roof and ceiling and one center bearing floor; roof and ceiling and 2 clear span floors etc.

Assuming that you used the 2 (2x12) header based on code requirements, I don't see anywhere that you can get by with less than 2 jacks under each side of the header. At least this is required in North Carolina which is based in the IRC.

What does he want to use, a piece of 5/4 or 3/4? Why does he want to use something smaller than a 2x, did he cut the headers short?

The jacks have to be nominal 2x by code.

Table 502.5 give the number of jacks for spans, # of floors, building width, etc.

recognizing stupidity is a large part of running a job in my opinion. dont let it sneak up and trick you into something dumb.

Re: Jack Stud Sizing Under Window Headers?

Code in Canada according to NBC is that it must be minimum 1 1/2" bearing for lintel spans of less than 10' and 3" for over 10'. But I wouldn't go more than 6' with single jacks. Do NOT go less than 2x material for any span, inspector will not pass this as long as he's awake.
BTW, it sounds like the framer might have f***ed up the RO size, then tried to hack in 1x material.

That sounds right.

I have never had a problem from inspectors going up 6' with a single 2x and two 2xs wider than that.

I've never seen anything less than a 2 x either for a jack stud bearing wall. Can't quote that in the code book but I doubt it's legal.

Re: Jack Stud Sizing Under Window Headers?

If the framer did screw up with short headers, depending on how many, without ripping them out he can try to use the Simpson HH hangers. If not, he has to fix it.

Its usually on my prints, how many jacks. It is good to know the gen rules tho. But show him the plans, if it is in print, and if it fails he will have to fix it.
