Installing Fiberglass Columns

Installing 20' by 18" columns for a friend of the family. I need to know how heavy these things are so I know how many guys I need out there. I cannot use equipment as it's existing home, existing landscape. Any experience out there?

Re: Installing Fiberglass Columns

I have installed 10 foot x 8 inch and that was heavy enough for 2 guys. I would want 4 or 5 bodys there. Make sure you have a good set of eyes spotting for you...just in case.

Re: Installing Fiberglass Columns

I manhandled a 10" pair 8 ft long. It was tough I didnt realize the weight either. I would say about 200lb each @ 8ft so 25lbs per ft ought to be close if not overkill. I would think your in the 450lb range. We did a pair like yours a while back we used a mason scaffold set-up and a pulley attachement at the top. Worked like a charm with 3 guys 4 should be safe.

Thank you all, very much. The scaffold with pulley was exactly what I was thinking.

Re: Installing Fiberglass Columns

We just installed some 20' ones. Used one man on the scaffold and two on the ground. We really needed at least one more man. They were heavy.

Re: Installing Fiberglass Columns

I just finished up installing 34 10" x 8' fiberglass columns. I was able to carry them by myself but would not recommend it, or should I say my back would not recommend it. For that size I would have to agree 4-5 guys. Better to have too many than not enough. And hell if it is dropped and damaged they are pretty pricey!!
