Ideas On Removing The Roof
I'm in the process of rebuilding an old concrete block barn that's about 1500 sf, 50' long. The current roof structure is shot, all 2x8 rafters sitting on a built up girder. (3 2x8's nailed together). Since the complete roof is shot, shingles, plywood most of the 2x8's, I'm replacing the whole thing with trusses. Any ideas on the best way to go about this without damaging the existing CMU walls, about 8' high. I could remove it piece by piece but I've done this before and it's dangerous and time consuming. Looking for a better way and still save my walls, thanks.

Re: Ideas On Removing The Roof
you could put a stong back down part of it and cut it loose and lift it off in big pieces.

Re: Ideas On Removing The Roof
cut the middle one third out, leaving the one third on each end. Install the trusses in the middle and shore up-then tackle the ends. Support the 2x8 girder before cutting or else the roof may collapse when cutting the middle one third out. Might be a good idea to check the walls for plumb-being concrete I'm not sure you can do anything about them. Is there already a wood cap on the top of the concrete blocks to fasten the trusses too? Use an approved metal connector for this task.

Re: Ideas On Removing The Roof
Thanks for the good ideas. Plans changed now, I want to make the barn taller so I can put a truck lift in there. Now I guess I'll have to build walls on top of the concrete block and then truss it from there. I also want to fill the cells with concrete and add some rebar to beef it up some. The walls are plum for the most part so I don't think they will move once the roof structure is off but I guess some bracing would be a good idea anyway. Any opinions on raising the height another 7-8'?

and now u want to go 7-8ft taller than what was dangerous before?
Ha! Ha! They used flying buttresses on Notre Dame. You might want to talk to an engineer. r |
