what makes 'you' think your the one paying 'me'. quite an assumption dont you think. By the way I must say that your work ethic is unbelievable. I don't know if you know but you get places in life working as a team not going against everyone else....seems to me that you have a VERY big chip on your shoulder mate!

There is no "I" in "TEAM", but there is a "ME".
I love when the "team" card is played: What about me me me me me
Here is the answer to that:
There is on "I" in "*****", but there is a "YOU"

Richard,
I'm pretty new here to this forum but the responses here are pretty similar to what you would get from the JLC boards. Now since I'm not my own Boss (yet) I look at it from a more sympathetic place.
The long and short of it is I would not work more than a morning for someone who I felt was a disrespectful a$$hole to me. Now... that's not just being unfriendly and inflexible, I'm talking swearing at me and yelling - and not a one off explosion after a major screw-up.
Quitting is the only option if you are truly giving it your all and he is truly disrespectful.
Either he cold hard doesn't like something about you and is trying to weed you out... or he is a tool that will only enjoy it more and more the more you squirm. Either way you can't win.
The big question I think you need to answer for your self is how does he treat the other new guys?
Good luck,
Matt
(BTW At the end of every day I need to record roughly what I did for project billing purposes, as well as to provide info for future bidding - and my supervisor and boss are both great guys. Accountability is not necessarily a bad thing if you are a keener - and if you're cruising construction forums you are probably keen.)

I have seen crews where the boss would pick a target and give him hell. Say things to him he would never say to the rest for the most part. Seemed to be showing authority to the ones he was scared of by picking on and completely disrepecting his mark/marks. It was sad thing to witness even though the crew was mostly dopeheads.

Ive been in this buisness since 1976 I started as a laborer. Ive owned my own construction business since 1990. Ive been on both sides they both suck!
Being the new guy sucks. you gotta suck it up and bust your ass. not be on time... be early and start getting stuff ready that will get you noticed.
dont be a belly-acher.. you will be the first to go.
The Boss aint rich if only the new guys knew the headache of a 8 man carpenter crew. Insurance, Matching taxes, tools, trucks, builders, and probably the biggest keeping money coming in to make payroll for the guys.
Right now its really tough here in pa. and the slackers are sitting at home!

do you know what the difference between you and I, Richard?
I could call your boss tomorrow morning ... start working before lunch. I would work through lunch. In fact - our boss is paying me LESS than you, since I just started and all
I would work CIRCLES around you. And I would make you feel bad while I was doing it. And I would make you look bad. Intentionally too - just because it would be fun. I wouldn't say anything though, I'd just keep working. But I'd be working fast and accurate. There would be nothing else on my mind except the task at hand and WHILE I was working, I would be continuously asking myself "how can I make this more efficient?"
So then I would become more efficient --- without your boss (or, "our" boss rather) telling me how to do it. I would simply just become efficient.
So now I'm working circles around you AND i am more efficient. Mind you, i haven't stopped to think about this. I have been continuously working, and figuring out the whole time how to become more efficient.
Within one week - I will take your job. May even take just one day -- but our boss is trying to get a feel for me.
I can now fill two positions - simply because I am working SMARTER and HARDER than you could. While you we're chasing lunchtime and crying because someone likened you to "molasses" -- I was chasing your job. I had fun doing it too - you were just getting in the way. And it was easy.
Here's the kicker: I can do this to you in just about ANY industry or work environment there is. You simply have NO job security if we're working together.
If you can identify where I am coming from in this - then maybe, just maybe I could give you some tips on how to deal with your boss.

This is what I've been telling the new guys for many years...just shut up, put your head down and work.
Getting into the trades is a career. Effort and studies must be put into it. If you don't like it. Two choices...quit and find something easier or learn to like it. Study...put your heart and mind into what you do. The better you get at it, the more you're going to enjoy it. Thing is about these kids now days, they all want to learn, but only during work hours when they are getting paid.
A few things that I learned from the old timers when I started.
Get to work half hour before starting time, settle in and start thinking about what you're going to do that day. Not half hour early sitting in your car and walking in 5 minutes before work. You'll probably find that some of the best guys will be starting to set up before work and would appreciate your help. Once you earn your fellow workers respect, I think that you'll find that they may be passing down their hard earned knowledge to you during that time.
Keep yourself humble, no one will want to teach or work with a cocky guy. Cocky over confident guys are the ones who make the biggest mistakes.
If you are the most junior person on the crew, behave that way, don't go around trying to teach people what they already know.
When the boss scolds you. Shut up and take it, don't say a thing until he's finished, better yet, when he's finished, just say yes and go back to work. The scolding will pass sooner and there's a better chance that you won't be fired on the spot by pissing him off even more.
There are two kinds of bosses. One that yells and one that says nothing. Always take the one who yells...at least you know what he's thinking and gives you time to correct yourself. The one who says nothing will just hand you your last paycheck when you least expect it.
At this point consider yourself lucky. You are probably starting out and on the lower end of the pay scale and your boss is just expecting a solid days work out of you. Your boss may like you and see some potential down the road, otherwise I assume you'd be gone by now.
You want to impress your boss? Get to work at least 15 min. early, leave the ipod in the car, cell phone in your lunch bag...don't humm, don't sing, don't whistle while you are working, shows that your mind is not on the job....at least 10 minutes before work, start rolling out the cords and tools so that when work begins, everyone is ready to produce... be on time every time every time, do your best not to miss work any work... bring your breakfast with you to work, get there early, eat your meal and settle in... don't eat a heavy breakfast or lunch, justs slows you down, (nothing brings more joy to my heart than to hear someone say, wow, I'm so full, feel like taking a nap right now) try to schedule appointments where you don't have to leave early, if you have to, take it in the last hour or work. Anticipate and do things without having to be told.
It normally takes about 3-5 years just to get the basic knowledge and skills of a trade. The rest will come through experience. There's a long road ahead and if you want to make it, you need to have the dedication and desire.
The competition is fierce, and if you don't love what you're doing, you're never going to get good at it.

Try working on a rough framing crew, I started carrying lumber for framers you better be ready for anything, My boss would have me go at lunch and buy him a pint of Jim Beam everyday, after that things would calm down a little . Laboring for masonary crews can be quite an experience too
