How To Cut 18 Ga Hollow Metal Doors ?

What's a good method of cutting a comm. hollow core metal door 18 - 20 ga ?

Today I used my clamp on straight edge and sawzall -- shoe against the straight edge. Only had a 8" metal blade. Of course wanders on the lower cut.

Does a 4" sawzall blade work better or what else ?

Have to go back and redo the threshold and cut the door again.

Definetly circular saw and guide. Could try blade backwards or just spend the money on a good Freud ferrous blade and get a perfect cut.

If you're only doing a single door and don't want to invest in a metal cutting circular saw blade, a 4" abrasive cutting disc in an angle grinder would work, cutting one side at a time.

Probably operator error, but the one time I attempted that with a grinder there was noticeable wobble in the cut.

I do use a grinder to cut some stuff.

How about running the disc next to a 1x clamped on to the door. each side ?

I would use a metallic guide vs. a 1x

That's how I've done it. Scrap of angle iron clamped to the door & ran the abrasive blade against it.

Your typical everyday carbide tipped circular saw blade will cut through the light sheet metal of a door with no problem.
The blade won't last too long but if your only cutting one there is no point in getting a dedicated metal cutting blade.

I found out the blades cut steel pretty well while using a wheelbarrow for a cutting table while building some form work.

Circular saw one side at a time, last thing I would use is a sawzall there's no controlling the end of the blade.

A good carbide tipped circular blade is a worthwhile thing in your arsenal. I'd bust out a few duckets and get one if you don't have one. I've used them in my cabinet saw cutting aluminum stock, often 1/8" and sometimes 1/4". I've cut tons of the stuff with the same blade without sharpening.

Aluminum cuts like wood, steel is a little more nasty, I think the rake angle on the teeth is different for steel vs non ferrous. For $50 grab the proper blade instead of shortening the life of a good wood blade.

I dedicated a blade for metals. 1/4" aluminum cuts slow so I think it would do 18 steel. One thing to watch for with a dust collector though is to disconnect it for steel and maybe a dust bag. The embers can sit for a while and ignite wood dust, heard a few horror stories.

Al likes to weld to the carbide, the only way I found to route Al frames and doors was to wax around the template before cutting.

Re: How To Cut 18 Ga Hollow Metal Doors ?

I met a guy a few years ago who was cutting a steel fire door in a condo with a side grinder. Sparks everywhere, he was cutting in the hallway, over carpet and I was walking past him with the building inspector. Who asked him what the hell he was doing.

Did not go well, he had to replace the door, a lot of carpeting, and a lot of wallpaper. Those sparks melted into the carpeting and the vinyl commercial grade wallpaper. The condo association was not pleased.

14" Demo saw with carbide blade rated for demo saw use...
Water cooling...

I've cut a dump truck box in two in less then 5 minutes...

Different grades/sizes of abrasives are available for differing gauges of metal cutting..... too fine and they go dull on thick material, cut rough on to thin of metal with too large of grit.

Cut door away from carpets......
