Re: Home Construction Using Wood On Lot

a heavy machinery operator who did the excavations for a renovator i used to apprentice with tried doing this. he had the 1st floor walls up and they shut him down. told him he had to have the lumber stamped, had to tear apart all the structural framing and redo it with stamped wood. used the stuff he milled for blocking and firewood

Kirk, who polices this kind of thing? Im just wondering if he tries to do this under the radar, at what point would he be caught and who would be doing the catching? Would the banks check before financing or an insurance agent once it was already built, or would one of the subcontractors rat him out?

he had permits to build the place, so when the city sent out an inspector to check the framing, they shut him down.

I dont think you would save that much by the time you milled it all yourself to make it worth the risk and extra work.

Why doesnt he instead log some of it, sell it/trade it to the mill in exchange for the stamped lumber he needs. Ranchers around here do that most often around here. (Though you wouldnt get shut down if youre out of the city limits cuz their is no structural permit to be pulled ; just septic, electric, plumbing, and Hvac.)
