Header For Roof Support.

To whom ever can answer this question?
I am buying a house and my wife wants a cathedral ceiling in part of it. I want to put a beam across an area 18' long under the ridge to replace the ceiling joists. What dimension lumber do I have to use for this opening? Using a header constructed of 2 X 8, 2 X 10, or 2 X 12? Can I use the manufactured I-beam joist for this project? This is inside the house and not to the end of the building. I know a corner post would have to be made to mount the header on from an interior wall. Can this be done or can you give me another option to do this. I hope you can understand what I am trying to do.
Thank you for you time.
Bernie

Questions
What style of house
How many stories ( is the cathedral 1st or 2nd story )
What type of existing roof framing ( stick vs truss )
Dimension of roof framing
Dimension of ceiling / floor joist framing
These will help you get better answers to your questions

Yeah, here's a good option for you:

This is not www.freeengineering.includingliability.com. Ante up and hire an engineer, just like we do; and while you're at it, get a permit and hire a contractor too, before you get somebody killed.

BTW, anybody know how much gunpowder I should use to blow up the rock in my basement? It's about the size of a Volkswagen beetle. Also, does anybody know where I can get the gunpowder for free? I'm on a budget...

Hey Mike, Posting a ficticious site is uncalled for, You gave the guy a stool to stand on, then kicked it out from under him.... not cool.... it was his first post too... and a homeowner at that.

Scary. After 38 free written estimates from local contractors, they declare themselves to be amateur structural engineers, exempt from all state and local codes, and officially ready to git 'er done.
