Re: Hardy Siding

About the same over here also. Just curious but years ago I had a customer who tried to back the window and door opening out of the total sq ft coverage...I sort of chuckled over it and said no problem but I'd have to charge an additional window and door trim fee of $75 per unit...just wondering if anyone had a customer try to sneak that past them before.

Re: Hardy Siding

"Mr. Customer. We actually don't reduce costs for window openings because unlike alot of guys we don't charge you for waste. You see there is a certain factor of materials that never get installed. This is just the nature of the construction business. SOme pieces are simply too short to install and still have a perfect looking job. So if I were to back out the size of the windows, I would then have to add for waste like everyone else and it'd be a wash."

Re: Hardy Siding

I have been hearing rumors that Fiber Cement Siding will not be around much longer.

Numerous law suits for cancerous materials.

I know some peoples' insurance will not cover them if they install Fiber Cement Siding.

Intersting, I had not heard this but I new it would only be a matter of time. I was there with the representative the first day the stuff came out and it has and always has had huge warnings on it that it contains the cancer causing agent SILICA. I don't see how they will win. I don't have time to worry about cancer, I gotta get over to the other site and play some more ASTEROIDS.

Cutting of Silica has caused cancer for years, decades infact. It's still on the market.

With proper training and equipment fibercement can be cut with very little dust. The problem is guys are too macho to wear dust masks and too cheap to hook up dust collection systems (vacuums) or buy trimming shears which cut with zero dust.

All the knowledge is out there we just have to exercise it.

Trim is always extra. Difficulty is always extra. Off the top of the head pricing is that which would be for an easy in and out average jobs. Anything out of the ordinary is to be priced accordingly.

You see pricing by the sq ft/piece is stupid. Yes it is absolutely stupid. It's a great way to put yourself right out of business. But yes I know we all do it, I even do it! However I have historical data knowing how many hours something takes, so I know how many squares my crew can hang in a day. I also know all of my costs, having two accountants and a pay roll service. Therefore it's not hard for me to figure out piece rates for average jobs, but as things get harder my rates go up.

Also, it is important that I state when ever figuring out something custom or something for the first time, I am never figuring by the piece. I am always figuring trying to make educated guesses as to how long it will take to do, then add labor burdens, over head, material and finally add in profit. It takes a lot longer to bid, but this way I know I am not cutting my own throat.
