Question

HardiPlank Over Cedar..?

Hey Ya'll,

I am starting a rebuild of sorts soon and have some questions.
The garage had to be re-trussed due to snow load failures.
My part of the job is to side from the wall-to-truss transition, all the way up to the peak of the gable end, and install soffits all the way around.
The architect/eng specified HardiPlank for siding so I am essentially starting where the existing cedar siding stops and continuing up.
  1. What should I do, if anything, at that transition from cedar to hardi?
  2. The A/E spec'd sheathing the gable end in 3/8" osb prior to siding.Hardi states that you need 7/16 to nail to. Do you think that the 1/16" thinner sheathing will transfer more ripples/waves in the appearance or that it will provide too little purchase?
Thanks for your feedback.

You could install and flash a Band board. But thats normally used for changing siding types and that might not look asthetically correct there since your going lap to lap.
As for the 3/8" osb I'd use whatever makes the transition smother. However, make sure all your nails hit the studs and joints too.

I take it they want hardi because of the cost of cedar! If you are really worried about the plywood I would use CDX over OSB and nail your hardi to the trusses using a ring shank nail even though Hardi recommends a smooth shank nail.

Re: HardiPlank Over Cedar..?

sounds good to me, i always nail to studs with harti or clapboard indirectly, we foam all our walls then put nailing decking to the studs to create our rainscreen then nail siding to that

Re: HardiPlank Over Cedar..?

thanks for the input.
We are going with Hardi since that's what the A/E has on the approved plans.
In rural areas of CA, we are not allowed to put any siding, overhang, roofing, etc that is not class A fire rated, even when rebuilding an existing structure.
It's all about the wildfires.
Leave it to stupid CA to regulate the construction industry, rather than spending some of our tax dollars on thinning the dang forest...
