Garage Foundation

Can anyone provide me with some good specs for pouring an Alaskan slab foundation. Sub-base material? Vapor barrier? Rebar or mesh? I am building a 20x20 single story, wood framed, detached, unheated garage in Chicago. Monolithic slab meets code. Existing garage slab has heaved badly. Should I use a stem wall instead and float the slab? I want to overbuild.

Re: Garage Foundation

What in the world is an "Alaska" foundation? That is a pretty big place and the part where many people lived does not have bad winters.

You have an existing garage that is unsatisfactory and you want to build another?

Around here (Minnesota) where the frost is deeper (4' to 5') than Chicago, many garages are built with 8" concrete block stem walls on continuous unreinforced footings (8" thick x 16 to 24" wide). The stem wall extends 8" above the floor to provide protection for wood and make cleaning easy (8" more headroom also). The slab is a 4" minimum floating slab poured to direct drainage as desired (door or drain) on a 4" to 8" compacted base. Most people use a 6-10 mil poly as a vapor barrier because it is cheap. Sawed joints (1 to 1 1/2" deep) if and where desired. Air entrained concrete since there may be salt and freezing since it is unheated.

It is very easy to build it cheaper, but is usually not acceptable considering the possible problems and the pennies saved.

Hello crazy horse. Please take a moment and read over our posting rules. You will find that triple posting is not only frowned upon, but against our Posting Rules. You will find a message about them at the top of each and every forum. Please take a moment to read over them.

Welcome to the forums. By the way, what is plumbing/remodeling? Are you a plumber?
