Florida Building Codes Pertaining To A Tiki Roof???

As some people know I am driving myself more crazy trying to find everything my client wants for a tiki bar/outdoor kitchen. Well today I had someone call me about the tiki roof over the end of the bar. He said that since it would be connected to the house that they couldnt do it because it would not pass an inspection due to fire codes. Since I hadn't heard anything like this from anyone else I figured he was full of shyt. However, I cannot hear something like that and just let it go so here I am since my online search has not given me anything I thought was relevant. Does anyone know... know... what the deal is with all that?!

Please enlighten me.

Thanks in advance!

whta code book do u guys follow? we use 2003 IRC residential code book. If you attach to the house they are requirements yo uwill need to follow. If you dont attach it they probably consider it a deck covering.

The local indians have this pretty well sewn up, they are the only ones allowed to pull permits for thatched roofs.

I let my license here expire a few years ago, but http://www.floridabuilding.org/c/default.aspx

Hit enter too fast, sorry... you can call the building commision and just ask them... if you attach it to the roof it will be structural which will require a permit, and a CBC... but you can call and make sure.

Once attached it is considered part of the original structure. Since there is no fire class rating for the roof covering on a typical palm fron roof, you will not be able to build it. Well not in Florida, Up north, who knows?
Now if detached, an Idian tribe could build it without any structural inspections.

You can order different types of thatch which has been fireproof trated. I've gotten some from Bensons before.

They're in Long Beach, Calif., a bit far for you but I bet you could find some in Fla. somewhere.
