Emergency Board Up

I do work for a client that has several properties. Got a call from him at 7 pm a couple of weeks ago that an auto went into his first floor unit of a 4 unit condo. The long wall (going with the floor joists) got pushed in about a foot. The siding, interior dw got all torn up etc.

I provided 5 sheets of OSB, 2x4's and 2x6's and peel "n stick. I finished up at 12 30 am and returned the next day to clean up and remove the scrap, a couple of hours. At the site it was just myself, truck, tools, lights. The owner acted as a helper as he is fairly capable. I could have brought another man with me if needed.

What would you guys charge to respond to an ER board up and then per hour 1 or 2 men ? This is the first one I've done.

I charged (1 man) $350 to respond for the first hour, then $90 / hr thereafter, plus $2 / per mile portal to portal. Materials marked up 25%.

Steve

Good lord that is a lot of money!!!
You didn't use OSB to board up the exterior did you? Also, in your case you need to bill for one man. I don't think that you can charge the client per hour to use himself. Just my opinion, but if it were one of my properties and i saw a bill like that...I wouldn't pay it.

Re: Emergency Board Up

OSB - It's a temporary board up. The insurance restoration co will do the reconstruction. Being 2 story and a condo, structural damage, it's more than I'm doing now.

The insurance co didn't seem to have a problem with the invoice.

Responding in 45 min from the initial call and working past midnight...I'm just curious to what kind of rates EBU contractors charge ? If it wasn't me it would be someone from the phone book. What would they charge ?

Sounds fair to me.
More importantly, it sounded fair
to the insurance adjuster.
They will always tell you
if they think it's too much.

Re: Emergency Board Up

Since insurance is paying, ask the client who helped if he would like to be compensated for his time and if so invoice the insurance co.

He has every right to be paid just like you, since it is his policy he may forgo to try and save some premium...FWIW $ 500 OR $ 600 for him is not going to affect his premium plus I think he is entitled to be paid since he was part of the emergency board up 'crew'
