Dug Footer For Deck, Monster Rock In One.

I have had lots of experience prying rocks out of footer holes, (as all of us have had), but this one is HUGE.

It's actually at the bottom of the footer, about 1/3 of the 12in hole. the top of this rock is at 28inches, minimum footer for frost heave is 30 inch in this area of NJ.

The rock goes down at least 36 inches and disappears into the side.

To visualize it, I had to cut a 3 inch high, 5 inch long round notch in the sonotube.

My question is, since the rock is actually through and below the frost line, can I leave it? This is one of the those family/friend jobs, and my inspection is monday morning. (tomorrow)

I worked on this rock for about 45 minutes and all I dig was widen the base of the hole! It never moved.

Ramble,

Here in CT we would be allowed to leave it.
Good luck

here in PA when this happens we are allowed to drill and pin it. drill into the rock with a hammer drill and use a rebar pin to secure the conrete to the rock. it pretty easy!

I just did that 2 weeks ago. Most houses in the area were cleared with a kaboom, so it was expected.

Same issue with a deck footing.
We also did what was mentioned above.

Well, it didn't matter.

The footers were dug on Sat, it rained Sat night, and today at 2:15pm, I stopped by for a visit and to check to see how full of water they were. (and to get a beer!)

The rain cleared away the dirt on the stone, I saw the slight contour at the back side and started to pry. It moved, and out it came.

I use 12 foot piece of 1 foot wide landscape fabric. I roll the rock on top and 'hammack' the stone right up. Like a really big slingshot!

Those stones have a strange sense of humor.
