Re: Demolition Help

If you have to bid on demos, go high. I usually go T&M with a high est. You never know what you are getting into on these jobs.

My son hit a 1/4" soft copper gas line a few weeks ago. It was definitely a DIY job and ran from the kitch through the attic and to a bath. The HO had been there for 25 yrs. and didn't even know that gas was available in her area, there also were no indications (valve, reg., meter, appliances) that gas was present anywhere. I bent the line and crimped it with visegrips, the HO panicked, called the F.D. and I lost about 20 m/hrs. Bid high and have lots of pertaining clauses in your contract. Mine just got a little longer.

Re: Demolition Help

Have this plaster tested first. The 20 bucks for the test at the local lab is worth it to know. I say this because some plaster men during certain years used asbestos as a filler/binder in the plaster. It can turn a simple plaster demo into a medium sized remediation job.

I've been on one government job that even had the asbestos guys there demoing sheetrock. The sheetrock didn't contain asbestos, but apparently the type of joint tape that was used in that building contained asbestos. Go figure.

I know that people requesting a demo bid didn't hire you as their hazard consultant, and some can get pretty worked up if you want to test for stuff like lead, asbestos, etc before you bid. If you find those things, then they officially "know", and have to take the necessary steps to keep that stuff from getting out or remediate it. Testing first is simple CYA on your part, I believe
