Core Drilling Concrete Wall
I need some creative help with how to contain the water from the core drilling process in a basement that is being used in a commercial building. There are no floor drains in any of the areas that we are planned to work in and the area must be kepp clear of water at all times so people can continue to work safely will we are working. Any ideas or past experiance would be very helpful. Keep in mind that I don't have any thing in my budget for this.
Thank you Kirk Davis |

Re: Core Drilling Concrete Wall
How large a hole are you talking? How much clearance do you have to the floor below the hole? Is the wall area below the hole free of obstruction during the drilling process? Is a floor drain or exterior door otherwise available within 50 feet of the hole location?

Re: Core Drilling Concrete Wall
The holes are approximately 4" in dia. The clearance is approximately 9-10 ft to finish floor. Yes, the wall area is un-obstructed below the holes. No, floor drains. The only exterior door is located at the top of ramp and will not work. I am assuming that we are going to have to damp the water some way and removed it in the area of the ramp.

Re: Core Drilling Concrete Wall
How about building a spout underneath the drill with modeling clay and let the water drain into a bucket.

Re: Core Drilling Concrete Wall
You could fashion some kind of gutter(s) with a hose thread drain spout in the bottom of it and afix it to the wall below the drilling locations. Materials that come to mind are roof gutter sections, drywall mud pans and wallpaper trays (pans). A garden hose connected to the gutter could convey runoff to a 55 gal drum or buckets.
If the water can be allowed to run down to the floor, lots of pampers cut open might have sufficient absorbant property to manage the mess.

Re: Core Drilling Concrete Wall
I've actually been thinking of using a wet/dry vac and having a guy there to suck up the water. I see three or 4 locations that are a potenal hazard. I think if i post wet floor signs in the area that are affected we should be ok. But, thank you all for your suggestions they were all very good ideas.

Re: Core Drilling Concrete Wall
I am with you an the wet vac that was going to be my suggestion.
We wet vac when we cut wall openings w/ a diamond chain saw. It works real well, if your getting to much water to handle, stop the drill and catch up with the vac. |

Re: Core Drilling Concrete Wall
You can tape plastic to the walls under the hole to direct the water into a kiddie wadding pool and suck up with a wet vac.

Re: Core Drilling Concrete Wall
Rock core drillers use a heavy steel tub with a hole in the bottom to contain their drilling mud. To seal off between a concrete slab or roadway, they put an old couch cushion between the tub and the ground, then fill the tub with water. I guess that wouldn't work on a wall though.

Re: Core Drilling Concrete Wall
Will you consider drilling them dry? I've cored many a hole up to 5" with dry bits. Matter of fact, I seldom core with water in an occupied building.

Re: Core Drilling Concrete Wall
KD tape a plastic sheet under the bore and seal with 200 mph tape add a 3m to insure it dosent leak lay the other end in a bucket to catch the water and standby with another bucket to do a change if the first fills use the 200 mph tape to make the plastic sheet in to a flexable funnel the part you tape under make in a shape of a cresant DOUBBLE_A HAS IT

Re: Core Drilling Concrete Wall
Not sure what type of core drill you are using if it is a dry saw u can mist it with garden sprayer, thats what i use in schools when cuting door jambs. When we use a wet saw all you can do is plastic the area off and use a big wet vac and hope for the best!! GOODLUCK

I like to reply to questions I have encountered personally because a lot of people just read for knowledge. I have learned a lot of cool tricks off of old post on here just trying to give a little back.

Re: Core Drilling Concrete Wall
LOL i forgot to mention tape off all smoke detectors when cutting or drilling any kind of masonary in occupied buildings!!! I once landed a nice fine compliments of the fire marshall while cutting a door way in a block wall at a local college.
Needless to say thats one of those things you will never forget!
