Construction Management B.S. Degree Question

What schools are the best construction management schools in the US, and what are the actual differences between the perceived best and average schools in the end?

I am going to be finishing my AA this spring, and am currently applying to these schools for the fall:

1) Georgia Tech
2) LSU
3) Auburn
4) Texas A&M
5) Oklahoma
6) Florida International University
7) University of North Florida
8) Clemson
9) Virginia Tech
10) University of Florida

I have been doing as much research as I can online and have been coming up with no legitimate leads.

Can anyone comment on these schools? Anything would help. Thanks!

You might also want to investigate Purdue, Michigan State and Bradley University (Peoria, IL).

Re: Construction Management B.S. Degree Question

I don't know much about FIU or North Florida, but any of the others would be very good.

Why do you want to apply to so many schools? Are you looking for experience away from where you live, or do you want to stay close to home? Staying close to home could save you a lot in out-of-state tuition.

Are you looking for the "best" school? Any of them will present to you way more than you'll ever learn. There could be some regional advantages. For example, if you want to work in the petro or chemical industies, OU, Texas A&M or LSU would be better than some others on your list.

You really should sit down with a note pad and list what is important to you and what is not. That may help you narrow your list down.

I see you want Tech as number one...who knows why? But if you are eligible for the Hope scholarship that can save you some serious coin.

I should have included that I am from Florida, and money isn't the top priority in where I go to school.

I'm sorry if I threw you off with the numbering, but I forgot to mention that they were in no specific order just yet.

I am applying to see where I am accepted, and hopefully be able to narrow down the best transition in the list.

Hands on field experience would also be beneficial to a career in CM.

Re: Construction Management B.S. Degree Question

Check out the ASC (Associated Schools of Construction) site and see what schools consistently place at competitions in your region. The schools that place in the top three year after year most likely have a strong academic program. I would post the URL but apparently you have to have 15 post so here it is www dot ascweb dot org.

I'll second MSU - great program. I've met quite a few grads from Michigan State's construction management program and they were sharp kids. Seems they reported a good balance between the business end and hands-on construction exposure.

Re: Construction Management B.S. Degree Question

my two cents worth is this;

working in Michigan I had interns from Ferris State Univ and Mich State Univ. The MSU guys could not read large plan sets, post bulletins, and were week at project engineering. The FSU guys were just the opposite. And I am comparing work on K-12 projects with 340+ pages of prints, 350pgs of specs. The FSU program really tought them practical and useful stuff.

All of that said, I believe Florida was one of the first to offer CM as a degree and a course of study. I was a builder in FL and on the FCILB. Florida was regarded top notch. If you are from FL and want to work in FL, there should not be a choice.
