Clearance For Mantle

Anybody know how many inches you have to keep combustible material from a fireplace....ie the sides and top of a wooden mantle? I want to say 12" but for the life of me I cant remember

Its been a few years since I have had a request for a new/custom mantle.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Clearance For Mantle

It really depends on the fireplace, not necessarily the siz but the BTU's. The manufacturer of the fireplace should have specs specific to the unit.

If it was a new gas insert I would verify with the specs, but unfortunately it is an existing wood burning fireplace that we will be tiling around and installing a wood mantle.

Ohhh and thanks for the helpful link AtlanticWB!
