Chimney
O.K. Guys, I'm in need of your expertise again. I'm building an Arizona room for a client. And she wants a chimney built in the room. The problem is I never built one before. not to say that I can't, because if it can be built, I'm very confident that I can. I just have never done it as of yet. It will not be of block construction as far as finish goes, it is going to have the decorative stone. I'm in need of really how to do this, the entire addition will be steel construction 16 ga. Do I frame the chimney out and hang plywood or durock, or some specific board that is rated for chimney's, or do I build out of block and then apply the decorative stone or what. Anyone with experience with building chimney's please respond. I am not interested in hearing to check code in my area, I am aware that this is a step that is already being taken, Az. follows California codes, and right now Ca is implimenting International code, so I will definatley get the codes, but would like info on the most cost efficient, safest and the way that the best quality job will be the finished product.

Re: Chimney
What is your actual chimney going to be, insulated chimney pipe? And you are just framing an enclosure around the pipe that you want to put cultured stone on? The homeowner whose house i am working on now had a mason put cultured stone on a section of his front wall. They just stripped off the siding, tarpapered the sheathing, put on wire lath, and then mixed mud and stuck the stone on, used a mortar bag to do the joints.

Re: Chimney
What is going to be hooked up to the chimney? Generally stoves, inserts, etc have some kind of design criteria and specs for their unit. I have alwys let the stove or fireplace people tell me exactly what they want for clearances, firestops, hearth size and layout.

Sub it out to a qualified mason... Too much liability if something bad happens. |

Re: Chimney
Brian, What's an Arizona room?
A Florida room, proper, is built into the original structure. A screened in patio sharing a common roof and slab. Many have been enclosed with windows so as to include AC. Since the Yankees have invaded, this may be an add-on structure. Separate slab, alum. roof, etc.
