Re: Building Permit
Depends entirely on what city you live in. Check with your local code enforcement officials. Some demo may require an engineer's seal.

I would think most, if not all, areas WOULD require a permit for demo, - - I know mine does. It's just logical. What if you already did the demo, - - and was refused the PERMIT?? I have had instances where once my paperwork was already in, - - they let me start the demo before I got the final approval. |

Re: Building Permit
It is Always Best to check with the Local Building Department Before Starting Any Demolition.
In a case where you only wanted to Remove Partition Walls, should be No Problem, if you started Tearing down Load Bearing Walls, That is Another Story !!!

Re: Building Permit
Different municipalities have different requirements, check with the building department.

Re: Building Permit
Yea always find out first... then dont start till you have permit in hand. It would suck to tear down half the house and get your permit denied.

Re: Building Permit
In the state of Michigan it would be required. We are under a uniform code for the entire state as of 6 years ago.

Re: Building Permit
I know that the defining line that most towns and cities in my area use is:
If it's cosmetic (drywall, carpet, paint, trim work, boards, siding, replacement windows & doors) and you are not touching ANY kind of framework (load bearing or not), .. no permit is required. But, as mentioned you should always look into it. Call or go to Town hall, or..... Lately, I have just been checking the internet. Most towns now have government websights that have that kind of info. on it. My town has one. They show all criteria like what you asked about. Look up 'inspectional services' or 'Building Permits' or 'code enforcement' in their website, if they have one.
