Brick Veneer On Steel Angle Iron

I am trying to add a brick veneer to my addition that I am building. In lieu of making a footing 30 inches for the brick, I was going to attach angle iron to the structure and start laying the brick on that. What does it mean that the angle has to be bolted to double studs? I was just going to bolt to my rim joist.
Here is what the code says:

1). R703.7.2.1 Support by a steel angle: The minimum size for steel
angle support is 6 X 4 X 5/16 thick. This angle support shall be bolted to double
studs by two 7/16 X 4 inch lag bolts. The double stud support shall be placed on
16 inch centers. Flashing and weep holes are required at the bottom of the steel
angle. The maximum height of the veneer supported in this fashion is 12 feet 8
inches. A construction joint is required between this veneer and the veneer that
bears directly on the concrete foundation.

It means that you can't just bolt it to the rim joist- they want enough meat behind the angle to allow the lags to get a 3" or more bite into lumber- not the 1 1/2" you'd get from the rim joist.

Is there some reason you're not bolting to the concrete at or slightly below grade level?

Why not just lay 4" concrete block on the footing and come up the 30" to grade and then switch to brick? The veneer is not structural and can sit on the footing.

Did I miss something obvious?

Re: Brick Veneer On Steel Angle Iron

basically i have the a concrete slab. I have added sills and laid my joists. So I do not have room on the slab to start a layer of brick,I do not feel like digging down 30" and laying concrete so I am going to use angle. I could bolt to the existing slab but it seems that every 16" is ridiculous for a 3' brick veneer and 5/16" angle is excessive.

any ideas?

Have tried to talk to the code official? There may be better options, such as bolying into the edge of the slab.

Codes are meant to protect you from yourself in many instances. They are also meant for future owners that do not want to be mislead.

Bolting at 16" is not excessive considering the weight and the shear strength of those bolts in concrete. You will be attaching wall ties for horizontal restraint closer. The angle even seems a little flimsy.

Build it right and cry once.

Dig down, drill pins, pour concrete, never worry about it again.

what jb says, why worry weither your brick wall is going to fail in coming years.bite the bullet and pour some concrete footings.
i dont know how many times i have had ppl come to me and say,"i want to brick my house, but i dont think i have a brick ledge."i say ok,we will need to pour one.its not that hard.do it right the first time.

Code is code. Why would you not want to comply with it??

I also think that you should go with the code or as said

No need to be to over imaginative when it comes to build structures
