Re: Asphalt Curbing

Yes it can but at times its easier with a machine and sometimes its not. Is it one straight piece or curved? Are there other curbs there on the site? FYI, acurb machine is about 7 feet long and the last 5-7 feet need to be done by hand anyway.

Re: Asphalt Curbing

For 30 feet I know I wouldnt bring out a curbing machine. The time to get it on a trailer, set up, heat up, clean up, and put away wouldnt be worth it. My crew would simply shape by hand using a lute(asphalt rake).

If you wanted to do this yourself your going to need a few items to get it decent. Dont forget, the back side will be backfilled with soil or mulch I assume so you dont need to get the back side great looking, just the front.

Your going to need, The truck with a clean body. Before you go down to the plant put a little diesle fuel on the floor for a release agent. Dont let it puddle, just a covering. Your going to also need 1 ton hot mix / curb mix, a wheel barrow, flat shovel, lute, broom, a 5 gallon pale with a brush and a 1/2 gallon of diesle to wet the tools, and maybe somthing to mark the line of face like a chalk.

I will hope the plant is only a few minutes away as the aspahlt in a small quantity as you will get can cool rather quickly. Put a little diesle in the wheel barrow and put the aspahlt in the wheel barrow. Now wet the flat shovel and start to pour the aspahlt from the wheel barrow into the area of the curb making a windrow. Shape with the lute. dont forget to wet the lute also. You may need to do the pour and shape twice depending on the size of the existing curbs there.

If the curbs are a standard parking lot curb of 6 inch tall and 9 inch wide at the base you will probably use half of that ton but every plant I've ever known sells a minimum of a ton.

There is 1 other option. Can you get a professional to do this? A small seal coater type guy usualy does repairs also. They would probably charge $200.00. It may be worth while not for you to get involved. For a beginer its a pain. But if you chose to do this yourself get it done asap before the cold weather comes.

Good luck

Re: Asphalt Curbing

Now I know why you have such large stones. But being in the Corp could have just made you hard headed sarge.

I never did the corp but I did a stint in the AF and in the Army. Both branches, similar jobs. TACP in the AF and Pathfinder in the Army. Sort of an elaborate FO really. But non of that could have prepared me for being in the paving buisness. Aspahlt can be STRESSFUL

BTW, you will need pretty much the same tools with or with out the curber machine. Bring some help too. This may not be a fun job for an ageing former jar head. Seper Fi, and good luck
