Anyone Use This Product Yet...(sheathing)

I was a contractor "gala" last night that my lumber yard put together, lots of vendors there along with a nice dinner and entertainment. open bar all night too.

http://huberwood.com/

here is the link to a product i hadn't seen before and it looks promising and the cost isn't crazy either especially if you think it saves you tyvek/tape and the time it takes to setup to put that on., also it save the roofer from having to put felt/or any other expensive synthetic paper on the roof. the tape for this stuff isn't cheap, but i think it's still going to be easier and faster in the long run with less rot down the road from water damage.

i'm going to check on pricing per sheet, but the rep quoted me a few prices for 4x8 sheets and it was right up there with regular 1/2" or 5/8" CDX ext sheathing. It also comes in longer lengths than 8' so that would be really handy for sections of 9 or 10 foot walls. he said a case of tape runs about 300 bucks but will do a whole skid of the sheathing. they also sell a gun that you buy to put the tape on, and that is a one time cost. i'd be willing to try it out if it saves a few hundred bucks just buying tyvek, plus 13 dollar rolls of tape for tyvek. i know the rooftop guard for roof sheathing is 120-130 a roll now.

tell me if any of you guys have used this or seen it in person. i really like the idea a lot out of all the products i saw last night. also, marvin has a replacement casement window now, and it allows the customer to clean the outside pane without going outside. these aren't tiltpac style windows, it's the whole frame replacement window, the exact name they call it escapes me right now but i have done several of the double hung ones and think it's great they finally found a way to do it with casements.
one more thing, integrity doors are going to have a solid handle/faceplate on the door, instead of the set screws that always come loose over time and leave the customer standing with a handle in their hand and a shaft sticking out of the door. not sure if Marvin will follow in that eventually or not.

Yup.

The builder was unable to get the wall sheathing from Huber for this project since this was a package deal.

I like the Huber stuff. If they warranty it...then use it. Even if you get Tyvek tight and installed as they spec, it starts to look bad over time...I guess I need to get siding here soon.

so there is no need for ice/water barrier at the bottom 3' like we are required to use here?

i'm looking forward to trying this system.

my biggest concern is holding power for roof nails. i know typical osb ply sucks on roofing and a lot of places aren't allowing it, CDX only on roofs.
i never have done an project using OSB, i just never liked it. i know it's a lot cheaper though.

The density & holding power is more like Advantech than OSB. I would not compare call this product to standard OSB.

Still gotta use Ice & Water.

Re: Anyone Use This Product Yet...(sheathing)

I've seen some commercial projects using the roof sheathing. My opinion, if it's saving material and labor on tyvek and tar paper, that's a definite bonus in speeding up a project.

Re: Anyone Use This Product Yet...(sheathing)

does anyone know what they do for valleys? most roofers, at least mine, out there is using 36" ice and water shield in all valleys, so what is the best way to seal this stuff in a valley, and how are nails holding in it?

the tape for it looks like vycor window frame wrap material, wonder if that could be used if it's cheaper than the tape they are selling for about 300 for a case of 12 rolls.

I have heard nothing but rave reviews on this system. I look forward to trying it also.

their website says nothing of ice/water shield on valleys or at the eaves.
just two rows of their tape if you are weaving the valley or valley tape if you are doing a metal valley.

i'm going to one of their distributors today, to pick up something else, i'm going to check on pricing and see if they have the tape gun there and tape to compare it to using another brand of tape..

i know it's advantech underneath the cover, but since i have never used that, i wasn't sure what to expect for holding power. i normally just use real tongue and groove 3/4 subfloor ply (non osb) type on my floors.

my next project will have advantech on the subfloor though.

Re: Anyone Use This Product Yet...(sheathing)

I checked this morning with my yard and they can get this stuff but only in full skids 7/16" for walls is 13 bucks and change a piece, but the skid is 80 sheets and you can only order it by the skid. The 1/2" for roof was 17 and change per sheet and i think a skid of 60, not sure on that one.

i have no problem trying a new product but not when i have to buy 80 sheets when i might only need 35.

i guess unless yards start to stock this stuff and sell it by the piece, you might not see a lot of it out there for a while. I would think the company who has a relatively new product out there would want to make it as available as possible. I'll be contacting Huber to find out if they have plans to sell it in smaller quantities.

the case of tape was 340 bucks, for 12 rolls, pretty steep, and at that point, may not be a big cost saver, but will still save labor from having to tyvek or felt in a roof.

How is that stuff to walk on? Slippery or is there grip to it? Do you have to leave space for expansion in the joints?

8d gap on all sides (its made 1/16" smaller than 4' by 8') and it actually gets grippier when wet. It is slick on clothes, so don't kneel on it, but I wore work boots and tennis shoes on it in the freezing rain and it was very safe. Just DON'T step on the tape....you will slip and bust your keester.

This builder uses the 5/8" thick stuff, on 16" o.c. rafters for the solid effect.

I picked up 1/2 plywood for $10/sheet last week-$17/sheet for this stuff is pretty steep. OSB's down to $5/sheet-the price comparison for a big job is going to be a lot of extra money for the new material...sure would make a nice picture though!

Re: Anyone Use This Product Yet...(sheathing)

i got quoted 11 bucks and change for the wall sheathing, 7/16s they call it, which is what real 1/2 plywood measures anyways. then the true 1/2 for the roof panels were more, but i forget the exact number.

11 bucks is cheaper than 1/2 cdx is here in NJ.

i'm going to order a skid soon, and see if my yard can keep some there for me and i have it delivered as i need it for each job. my roofer sometimes uses it when he reskins jobs with old roof boards that aren't getting ripped off.

Re: Anyone Use This Product Yet...(sheathing)

I'm in Architectural Engineering Technology in college and this is the new product that everyone has been talking about. We had a larger contractor come in and talk. I asked if he used the zip wall system and he said thats all he uses. It saves some much time and it on average is cheaper than standard sheathing with covering on the side. Also, must be nice ApgarNJ, "gala" with open bar. Your yard knows how to take care of its customers. Mine yells everytime I grab a couple of free carpenter pencils. Open bar, sheesh.
