2006 Irc

Looks like MN will be adopting this May 31st

Has anyone seen the joist to sill connection requirements??

Holy crap.

1/4" angle steel w/ 1/2" bolt through EVERY joist!

There are no typos in that.

How many foundations are failing due to poor joist/sill connections to warrant this?

Re: 2006 Irc

There is also a "goof" on the anchor bolt spacing where is some condions you need anchor bolts spaced as close as 9" on center.

This apparently came about because requirements for Superior wall panels and wood basements that do require more lateral support at the top were applied to block and concrete walls. Block and concrete do not depend on the floor the give strength to the limber, catilevered walls, but they got included.

Some states may just eliminate the table and reference another requirement. Some officials are just ignoring the new requiremnt. Hopefully, it will get straightened out, but many states are very slow to respond to new code versions, so the changes may take long to come.

Re: 2006 Irc

My understanding is that those requirements will be maintianed if it is adopted.

Also they are requiring solid full depth joist blocking 2' o.c. for the first three joist bays perpendicular to the foundation. That is the MN amendment to the IRC which reads 2x4 blocking every two feet for the entire floor system.

Insane.

Re: 2006 Irc

The changes will be retained in the IRC until the next edition, which will be 2009.

Pennsylvania has a proposed bill to eliminate the requirement, but it was written by politians, so it may be worse than the "error". It was just passed unanimouslt withour debate by the full Pennsylvania Senate.

I did not catch the blocking, but it sounds like the same problem that came about because of the lower lateral strength of some of the non-block or poured concrete walls (Superior, precast, wood foundations) that need a floor to resist the soil loads. These are generally individually"catilever" type wall sections that must have lateral support from the interior floor system.

For anchor bolts, many code people may be ignoring the rediculous anchor bolt spacing (9") for some conditions and will accept something factual, like the ACI standards. Strap spacing will be even closer ( 1 1/2"?).

The ICC supposedly admitted it "slipped" by and was only intended for certain types of construction and in certain region, but it is part of the new code. The only way around it is to get local deviations and acceptance of ACI or even the old IRC (2003).

Re: 2006 Irc

Local deviations are not allowed in all of MN.

That blocking requirement I described was written by MN as an amendment to the 2006 they are trying to get adopted.

I'm talking about the 2006. They are skipping right over the 2003. It's the 2006 that will be our next code. Likely at the end of May.

I can't find my notes, but I believe the anchor bolt spacing was amended to 2' o.c. 1/2" bolts.

Re: 2006 Irc

My error - I just corrected the 2006 for the next IRC in my previous post to 2009.

It is a shame when the weakness or property of one type of basement wall system gets written into a code and ends up being a standard (anchor bolts) that cannot be justified as being rational for the other 99%.

This may also apply or be a reason for the rediculous MN blocking reqiurements, since there is no engineering reason.

Since the equivalent strap is tied to the anchor bolt spacing, it could be as close as 1 1/2" according to some officials.

I have not checked to see what happened to the blocking in hte 2006 IRC.

Every three years new codes are adopted or updated. There is a six month grace period before new 2006 codes are adopted in full then you have three more years of 06 codes that will be changed in 09 and take effect in 2010.

Re: 2006 Irc

It's different in every state dude. Building codes are State law where I am. They need to be approved by the legislature and they're always heavily amended before it becomes law. I'm commenting on the way they have it worded now and I hope they change it some more before it passes.
In Minnesota.

Re: 2006 Irc

It's funny that PA eliminated that requirement, because didn't Superior walls originate in PA?

Re: 2006 Irc

Yup.
And from what I hear they had a squabble with the IRC guys, and were largely ignored in regard to code until now.
