Winterizing House, Need Windows!

I'm winterizing my upstate NY summer house (no insulation anyplace) that currently has single pane old school windows (it's at least 50-80 yrs old). I'm having insulation blown all the exterior walls, etc, and was looking for help re: which type of window I need - double pane (or whatever the proper label is, not sure) or can I keep the original single pane and just put storm windows outside of those?

I'm all ears for any suggestions/comments/advice!

Thanks for you time.

Dave

Re: Winterizing House, Need Windows!

Double pane with LoE/Argon, plus a hollow multichambered frame and sash if using vinyl. These are features used for insulation in a window. Also make sure that if the contactor is doing a replacement window that he insulates around the outside as well.

Storm windows are a waste of money IMO. They may make a slight difference but look hideous. I also feel that they are obsolete when compared to other options.

Good windows should be NFRC Certified, Energy Star in your region, and AAMA gold seal. Good new windows will also make your house look better as well as eliminating drafts and leaks.
