we take the brake off the trailer if we are bending more than a couple items. its handy having it set up in there if we just have to do a couple windows, or do a repair

Your setup looks really good. Where do your ladders go?
Thanks Grob62,

Well to answer your question about hauling stuff is that the vehicle needs to be rated to haul said trailer or whatever. There's soemthing about Tongue wieght and GVW. I think my truck (04 F350) has a GVW of about 10000KG, and as my truck wieghts just over 3000KG i can haul about 7000KG? Does that sound right?

Oh and three mitre saws.... 12" dual bevel for large timber work (she's my baby, just nice slow cuts), 2 10" mitres, 1 designated for hardie (the dust gums things up) and the other is a team player, will cut the bulk of trim and when I need more than one hardie saw out (sharing is a time waster and costs money) I turn it into my second hardie saw.

I don't do a lot of aluminum trim up here... actually just one old folks apartment that wanted an aluminum trim with this wierd triple sill- what a joke. I did it... didn't think it was the way to go but who am I? Just the guy who'll cash your check!

The ladder's go up top, but I usually just transport them to the site on the roof rack of my truck.

Ya i hear ya Patrick, gotta poke it outside and rotate it! PIA for sure but ya get used to it. Mine's setup near the end of the trailer so the doors right there. Still a pain though!

Re: What Kind Of Truck Set-up Are People Using?

1999 F150 short bed with a 6X10 single axle trailer.
I only do windows, occasional door, siding rarely ( 2 jobs in the past 7 years). This set up serves me 95% of the time, most of my window jobs are 3 to 4 windows.

Before this one I had a 7X 16 dual axle pig. I bartered it for a new roof.

My goal was to keep my overhead low, no monthly payments (paid cash for trailer, truck is long paid for) light weight to save on gas. Therefore no permanent shelving, and I take all my tools out at night.

Nice clean set-up mark. Why are your jobs only that many windows though? Just curious. Aren't you doing whole houses?

Re: What Kind Of Truck Set-up Are People Using?

I have had three whole house jobs in the past 8 years, none in the last 3 years.
If those come up my plan is to rent a cube van for the day or two. A whole house job is about $16,000, so an extra $200 for truck rental is not a big deal.

In my area a typical house is a 1970's style cottage/split/bungalow, and it seems most of the clients I have dealt with, spread out their window purchases over a period of time. I guess Canadians are more frugal (or poorer) than Americans.

A pic of a rare siding (2 square) job I did last year. All the scaffolding, planks and material fitted inside the trailer. Because it is a V-nose it can hold a 12' box of siding on the diagonal slant.

My monthly cost of this setup is $70 (licence and insurance) A guy I know doing the same job for the same pay, has a lease payment of $650 on a Ram 2500. He needs it to pull his 14 footer that costs him another $400 per month.

that's interesting. Americans should be more frugal or responsible fiscally, i think we are all starting to realize that now.
