Re: Vinyl Siding---question On Lineals

pro's-nice looking install (no J's around openings). Con's-they take awhile to get the hang of cutting and they're costly-don't screw up cutting them! There is a bit of waste-they come in 20' lengths (I use Alcoa), you may end up w/ 2-4' of waste. Try to plan out your install-do larger openings first and save scraps for smaller openings. Use a calculator and your head-you can mix and match cuts/openings to minimize cutoff waste. Use a miter saw (backwards blade)-nothing like crumming looking 45's staring at you at the corners.

door openings and corners with the aid of a corner starter, if you so desire.

Got any pictures of recent work with no J's Patrick? What did you use for corners? What about your termination at the top?

Just finished this one last week. The only place you will find a J is on a roof line, or an inside corner. All of the trim has a minimum 3/4" revile between the face and the siding. There is no J channel on the rake either

Re: Vinyl Siding---question On Lineals

I haven't seen a product like that Patrick, except windows that come with J attached. I really like the look and want to know more. It looks like a metal lineal around the windows and lineals under the soffits. Very nice, just can't figure it out from the pics.

Re: Vinyl Siding---question On Lineals

All of the windows in the pictures are regular 3-1/4" replacement windows. ALL of the trim is made on site. ALL of the trim has at least a 3/4" reveal if not thicker. it is ALL water tight, requires NO caulking, has NO face nails or fasteners, and if you are worried about damage, we are able to snap any piece off and replace it without even touching the siding. It is all made from coil on site, however all of the trim pieces are foam filled so that they will resist denting. We have even gone so far as to standardize most of our profiles so that they can be made up in the shop and brought out to the job sites.

For the few of you that know what we are up to from past conversations, this is the final version we came up with that simply snaps together.

And no, this is not a one piece concealed J system. it is completely independent of the siding and can be replaced without removing siding

Re: Vinyl Siding---question On Lineals

are you using foam board under the window wraps? are you using a Brake Buddy for the profile? Does the entire profile sit flat against the foam?

great looking install!

Re: Vinyl Siding---question On Lineals

I was hoping it was some type of steel cladding with a channel. Not a fan of wrapped windows. Just problems waiting to happen up here with aluminum wrap.

Re: Vinyl Siding---question On Lineals

To be honest, it's real tough getting people to pay for upgraded siding, let alone a good job of wrapping anything, being it takes time and craftsmanship to do. Besides that we have alot of trouble with siders wrapping over things that are rotted or wrapping over coving........just puts a bad taste in my mouth. I'm sure if I seen your work, I would think it is A1, but like I said, it is tough to sell when nobody wants to pay for quality.

We dont have a problem. We stopped advertising a long time ago as a matter of fact. If you take two traditionally vinyl sided houses one done by you and one by a hack, chances are a homeowner will not be able to pick out the difference.

Now we show our customers all the houses on their street with vinyl siding and J channel, and they we show them our houses with no J channel and the customer actually can see the difference. Thats how we sell. We do not want the customer that "just wants the house sided" We want the customer that wants the house to look as much like real wood siding as possible.

The other thing is, this trim method is actually saving us money!!! We are saving on average $6,000-$10,000/ year with this method by not buying J channel

I have also broken down the wrap process so that there really is no craftsman ship involved it is easier to wrap with this system than traditional methods, we have also standardized our trim profiles

In most cases we can. The only thing that changes is the depth between the face of the trim and the face of the window.
