Re: Vinyl Siding Nightmare
i tape the vertical seams only usually
I'm not a big fan of vinyl siding just nailed to strapping unless you foam in between it

I've never installed vinyl that wasn't new construction or at least over fanfold on a reside. I'm not averse to being wrong. There was that one time last year...... Good luck Dave

Re: Vinyl Siding Nightmare
I've seen quite a few of these asbestos over Homasote installs. We're usually called in when the vinyl siding they nailed to the asbestos starts to loosen and fall off, since the Homasote doesn't hold it at all.

Re: Vinyl Siding Nightmare
In the few houses where I've had to repair loose siding there is no sheathing, only homasote stapled to the studs with the asbestos hung directly on that. Don't ask me how that works for lateral stability. So if you can find a stud and they're on 16s you're good, otherwise good luck.

Re: Vinyl Siding Nightmare
Dave i think vinyl should be installed on a smooth continuous surface, not directly to open studs or furring
Patrick im not oppose to nailing to the studs, just that usually by the time you put on your corners and window trim and j channel some times there are not many studs to hit for a good secure install
